Zack Greinke extends scoreless innings streak in win against Nationals

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke was masterful again Sunday against the Washington Nationals. Greinke tossed eight scoreless innings against the Nats, picking up the 5-0 victory.

Greinke allowed just three hits, striking out 11 and walking one. With the performance, Greinke has now thrown 43 2/3 consecutive innings without giving up a run. That streak is the fourth longest since the post-1960 expansion era, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Greinke was able to accomplish the feat despite losing his starting catcher during the contest. Yasmani Grandal was removed from the game after taking a foul off his catcher’s mask. A.J. Ellis entered the game in the sixth, but was able to guide Greinke through two more scoreless frames.

With the performance, Greinke is now within striking distance of the record for consecutive scoreless innings. That record was set by Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser in 1988. Hershiser threw 59 consecutive scoreless innings that season. Don Drysdale, another Dodger, held the previous record, which was 58 innings.

Greinke told Hernandez that he tries not to think about the his current run.

“I start thinking about that, I try to do more,” Greinke said. “The results will be worse.”

Greinke now has a 1.30 ERA following the performance.

KEUCHEL DOES IT AGAIN

Greinke’s opponent in the All-Star game was nearly as good Sunday against the Texas Rangers. Dallas Keuchel tossed a scoreless start, picking up the win in a 10-0 blowout.

Keuchel pitched one fewer inning than Greinke, but all his other numbers were better. He only allowed two hits, and did not issue a walk. Keuchel struck out 13 batters during the contest.

He was backed by Preston Tucker, Colby Rasmus and Luis Valbuena. That trio combined for eight of the team’s 10 RBI. Valbuena was the best of the bunch, going 4 for 5 and driving home four runs.

With the win, Keuchel has a 2.12 ERA. The Astros are now 51-43 on the year.

ESTRADA’S GEM LEADS JAYS TO VICTORY

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada didn’t begin the season in the rotation, and that’s starting to look like a mistake. The righty was solid against Sunday, picking up the 4-0 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Estrada shut down Tampa Bay. Over eight scoreless innings, he allowed just three hits. Estrada struck out five and did not issue any walks during the contest.

Of the players on the team who have started at least 10 games, Estrada’s 3.22 ERA ranks first. He had trailed veteran Mark Buehrle coming into the game, but passed him with the performance.

Estrada was backed by Chris Colabello and Jose Bautista, each of who hit a two-run homer. For Bautista, it was his second home run in as many days.

With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 47-47 on the season.

INDIANS WIN IN EXTRAS

The Cleveland Indians picked up the extra-innings win Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds, but they waited until Aroldis Chapman left the game before they struck. Cleveland pulled off the 5-3 win in the 11th inning.

The win came after the Reds clawed their way back into the game late. With Cleveland holding a two-run lead, Cincinnati was able to plate a run in the eighth and the ninth inning in order to tie things up.

Chapman actually entered the game in the top of the ninth, while his team trailed. After a scoreless inning, he remained in the game for the 10th. Not surprisingly, he kept the Indians off the board.

He was taken out to start the 11th, and that’s when the Indians struck. With one out, Pedro Villareal loaded the bases on three straight singles. Yan Gomes then walked, bringing in the go-ahead run. Jason Kipnis would hit a sac fly, giving Cleveland an insurance run.

Marc Rzepczynski entered in the bottom of the frame, and was able to get through it without giving up a run.

With the win, Cleveland improved to 44-47 on the season.
