Mets strand 25 runners, but still defeat Cardinals in extras
The New York Mets are synonymous with misery. Even when the club is good, it still finds ways to make its fans suffer.

That’s precisely what happened Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets actually won the contest 3-1, but it took 18 innings to secure the victory.
During those 18 innings, the team went an amazing 1-26 with runners in scoring position. The Mets haven’t been particularly strong in those situations all season.
The Cardinals, it should be noted, were nearly as bad. Together, the teams combined to leave 39 men on base. Of those 39 stranded runners, 25 belonged to the Mets.
The Mets’ ability to spread misery extended beyond the fans Sunday. Even broadcaster Keith Hernandez had a tough time dealing with the club’s ineptitude as the game went on (video courtesy of Sean Newell of Vice Sports).
As noted above, the Mets would eventually pull out a victory. After putting men on first and second to open the 18th inning, Kevin Plawecki sacrificed them over to second and third. One run can in on a sac fly, the other came in on a suicide squeeze.
Though the Mets succeeded, they failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position during the frame. Considering how long the game had gone on at that point, their streak of awfulness with RISP started to become impressive.

A win cures all, right? It may have taken five hours and 50 minutes, and the Mets may have failed to capitalize on a ton of opportunities, but in the end at least their fans were happy, right? Sitting through a game like that doesn’t sound frustrating at all!
