The Eye: All of Friday's best as MLB resumes
“This is crazy — I’m speechless,” is about all that Angels star Mike Trout could say after he hit a game-ending solo home run Friday night to beat the Red Sox 1-0. Trout’s blast came with two outs in the ninth against Red Sox closer Koji Uehara, sending Angel Stadium into bedlam. The victory allowed the Angels to stay in first place in the AL West by a half-game after the Astros beat the Rangers.
Earlier this week, Trout hit a leadoff homer and won the All-Star game MVP for the second straight season. His homer against the Red Sox came after an 0-for-3 start. The Angels did not appear to have a car ready as a prize.
The result was a kick in the gut for the Red Sox, who fell 7 1/2 games out of first in the AL East. Left-hander Wade Miley had a perfect game through five and took a no-hitter into the sixth, before finishing with one hit and two walks allowed over seven in one of his better starts of the season.
C.J. Wilson allowed five hits and three walks over eight innings.
The four-day All-Star break is finally over. Don’t get us wrong, the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game are fun in their own way, but it’s time the beautiful monotony of day-in, day-out baseball to return. It’s time for the dog days of summer.
Here is today’s edition of Eye on MLB, aka the Eye. It’s a one-stop shop for everything that happens in the world of baseball on Friday. Game recaps, milestones, key and quirky highlights, news, notes, rumors and more. Perhaps you checked throughout Friday for updates, or are reading the finished product Saturday morning. There’s no wrong way to do it!

Milestone Watch
Longest active hit streak: The hit-streak leader to start the second half was White Sox slugger Jose Abreu, who hit safely in his last 13 games before the All-Star break. Abreu went 0 for 3 with a walk in the first game of the team’s doubleheader on Friday, however, so his streak is over. The longest active hit streak now belongs to Red Sox utility man Brock Holt at a mere 11 games.
Pujols watch: Angels first baseman Albert Pujols starts the second half with 546 career home runs. He’s two shy of tying Michael Jack Schmidt for 15th place on the all-time homer list. Pujols also has a pair of two-homer games this season.
A-Rod watch: After going 2 for 4 with his 673rd career home run, Alex Rodriguez is one hit shy of tying Lou Brock for 24th place on the all-time hit list.
Hawkins watch: With his next appearance, Rockies righty LaTroy Hawkins will tie Jose Mesa and Lee Smith for 11th place on the all-time games pitched list with 1,022 career appearances.
