LA 5-2 San Jose: Gerrard, Keane lead way
CARSON, Calif. — Steven Gerrard scored in the 37th minute of his MLS debut before assisting on Robbie Keane’s tiebreaking goal in the LA Galaxy’s 5-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Friday night.
After the Earthquakes took a 2-0 lead inside 25 minutes through two Quincy Amarikwa goals, the defending MLS champions answered with a pair of their own before halftime.
First, Keane converted a 30th-minute penalty after Gerrard was fouled by Tommy Thompson. Seven minutes later, the former Liverpool and England captain pounced after a sliced clearance fell to him eight yards out and calmly slotted it to the far right post.
Keane’s new partnership with Gerrard got off to a tantalizing start for the Galaxy, who notched their fourth win in five games.
Two of Keane’s goals were created by Gerrard in his official debut game in the top North American league.
The longtime Liverpool star and England captain played briefly in two non-league Galaxy games this month, but a sellout crowd properly welcomed him in a dynamic victory for the defending MLS champions.
