California wildfires lead to postponement of minor league game
Friday night’s California League game between the Class A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and High Desert Mavericks was postponed due to safety concerns as a brush fire in the Cajon Pass grew out of control and cut off Interstate 15.
The fire produced smoke that towered over the ballpark, leaving no other alternative but to call the game. There were also concerns for those who may travel to the game, as up to 20 cars were destroyed on Interstate 15 and another 10 were damaged as the fire moved across the motorway.
High Desert issued a press release confirming the postponement a few minutes before the game was scheduled to open.
The statement reads as follows.
Due to the devastating fire over the Cajon Pass, tonight’s game has been postponed. A double-header will occur on Wednesday, August 12. All tickets for tonight’s game can be redeemed in person at the Heritage Field box office for any game throughout the remainder of the 2015 regular season.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the fire as well as the brave men and women who are working diligently to put it out.
The photo above gives us a frightening perspective of the scene in Adelanto. Here’s another scene that was replayed several times on all of the major news outlets Friday night. Startling stuff that absolutely takes precedence over baseball.
Here’s hoping those impacted by the fires are doing well, getting the support they need and will be able to move forward in short order. Our thoughts are with them.
