Baylor leads preseason All-Big 12 media team with 7 picks – Sports Update – Chron.com (blog)
Defending Big 12 co-champion Baylor led all conference teams with seven selections on the media’s preseason All-Big 12 team released Wednesday by the conference.
The other defending Big 12 co-champion TCU and Oklahoma each had five players selected, with Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia all with three selections. Texas cornerback Duke Thomas was the lone Longhorn picked, with none from either Kansas or Iowa State.
Baylor senior defensive end Shawn Oakman was named as the conference’s defensive player of the year and TCU senior quarterback Trevone Boykin was picked as the conference’s offensive player of the year. Oklahoma State running back Chris Carson was chosen as the newcomer of the year.
Oklahoma State middle linebacker Ryan Simmons, a Steele-ex, headed the defensive selections.
The picks might be the best indication of all of the changing perception of teams in the conference. The Bears led the conference in preseason picks for the second consecutive season.
In previous seasons, it would have been hard to believe that Baylor would lead the conference in All-Big 12 selections before Art Briles arrived.
And Texas having only one player picked shows how dramatic the Longhorns’ recent slide is seen by media members who regularly cover the conference.
Here’s a list of the players who were selected.
