Ty Lawson reportedly arrested for DUI for the second time in 2015

Ty Lawson was reportedly arrested for driving under the influence early Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. The Denver Nuggets guard was pulled over on California’s 101 freeway at 2:30 local time after officers reportedly witnessed him speeding. TMZ was the first to report the news.

This is Lawson’s second DUI offense of the calendar year, as he was arrested in January after being spotted driving 61 miles per hour on a 35 MPH road.

From TMZ:

We actually spoke to Lawson as he and his GF Ashley King (former “Bad Girls Club” star) were leaving Le Jardin nightclub in Hollywood — moments before they jumped on the freeway. Interesting … we talked marijuana with him.

He’s still in jail right now. His bail’s been set at $5,000.

It is not known if the video TMZ provided features Lawson just before the incident, or earlier in his evening.

Lawson was also arrested for drinking and driving while attending the University of North Carolina in 2008. Though his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit, he was still cited for underage drinking.

The Nuggets guard was also arrested for domestic violence in 2008, though the charges were later dropped.

There’s also this interesting aside, via Andy Glockner, about the youth basketball camp that Lawson was supposed to be taking part in from Tuesday until Friday:

We have had to make some last minute adjustments to this year’s camp. First, I apologize for the late notice. Unfortunately, due to Ty Lawson’s traveling schedule he does not feel he can actively contribute to this year’s camp, as a result he will not be a part of the camp.

Despite Ty Lawson not being involved we still have an exciting camp planned.

The last we saw of Ty Lawson, he was literally blowing smoke on draft night as the Nuggets selected 19-year old point guard phenom Emanuel Mudiay, smoking a hookah and guessing that he would be moved as a result to Sacramento in a trade.

The Kings, coached but not run by former Nuggets and Lawson coach George Karl, declined to deal for the final two years and $25.6 million on Lawson’s deal and signed Rajon Rondo to a one-year, $10 million deal instead. The Nuggets also fortified their backcourt by making sure Jameer Nelson stayed with the unit, to the tune of three years and $13.5 million.

Lawson, when healthy, can be a formidable talent. Though undersized, he’s managed career averages of 14.9 points and 6.6 assists per game in his career. He put up a career-high 9.6 assists a contest in 2014-15, but his per-game scoring dropped to 15.2 points per contest, and his three-point shooting dipped for the second consecutive season.

Worse, he clashed with coaches (including the since-fired Brian Shaw) and skipped one practice – blaming “travel plans” as he made his way back from Las Vegas following the NBA’s extended All-Star break. How “travel plans” relate to a “traveling schedule,” at this point, remains unclear.
