Kostitsyn brothers reunited on Torpedo in KHL
Andrei Kostitsyn wanted to return to the NHL.
His reps were shopping his services, selling him as a changed man – “better conditioned, more mature, and ready to make an impact,” was the pitch from Gary Greenstin.
But the 30 year old is still the guy who broke curfew with Alex Radulov in the 2012 playoffs with the Nashville Predators, and then bolted to Russia. There’s only so much NHL GMs are willing to tolerate for a player seven years removed from his only 50-point season with the Montreal Canadiens.
Apparently, the offers didn’t materialize for Andrei Kostitsyn, and he remains in the Kontinental Hockey League for a fourth season by signing a 2-year deal with Torpedo. He had 35 points in 50 games last season, splitting time between Traktor and Sochi HC.
Joining him there: His baby bro, Sergei Kostitsyn. (Before the “Entourage” comparisons start, Sergei Kostitsyn is definitely the Johnny Drama of the two, despite being younger.)
Sergei Kostitsyn had 27 points in 49 games for Ak-Bars last season, scoring a goal and two assists in 12 playoff games.
The two last played together with the 2011-12 Predators, in yet another one of those “David Poile Halfway House of Hockey” moves. Prior to that, they were both in Montreal, where they were involved in an infamous “guilt by association” situation with a known drug trafficker.
Now they’re reunited with Torpedo, the team that Nikita Filatov calls home. Perhaps they can talk about how Columbus is the “gloomiest” city in the U.S.
