This photo perfectly sums up Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald’s five-round war
LAS VEGAS – There’s an old saying: A picture is worth a thousand words.
After the way that Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler fought on Saturday night, a thousand probably isn’t near enough to describe the battle the two put on for the UFC welterweight title.
“Lawler and MacDonald are obviously in the hospital and they won’t be making it,” UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference.
Obviously.
The two welterweights put on a back-and-forth battle for the ages, earning UFC 189’s Fight of the Night in the process.
At one point, late into the third round, it looked like Lawler was on the verge of defeat – this, after giving MacDonald a broken nose in the first. He was pinned against the cage and eating numerous power shots as the bell sounded, at what seemed the very last possible moment.
Lawler took momentum back in the fourth round and finished the job during the opening seconds of the fifth and final frame in a rousing comeback that had the entire MGM Grand Garden Arena roaring in disbelief.
Check out this picture of the victorious Lawler posing with the man he just pummeled into oblivion, courtesy of MacDonald’s coach Firas Zahabi.
“Lawler and MacDonald might be the best fight of … ever,” White said.
White may be notorious for dabbling in hyperbole from time to time, but in this instance he’s spot on. If you missed the fight, check the picture and use your imagination.
And even then, it couldn’t possibly do justice to the UFC 189 welterweight title classic.
