New York tabloids, fans unhappy with the company Matt Harvey is keeping
Since he burst on to the scene as a rookie with the New York Mets in 2012 Matt Harvey has mostly been the toast of the town. He’s graced magazine covers, and been gossip column fodder thanks to his relationships with models, all while also being one of the best young pitchers in the majors.

Suddenly some of the goodwill Harvey has built up is slipping away. The latest hit to his image is thanks to him getting a little cozy with Donald Trump. Trump, the eccentric billionaire and political pariah, owns a new golf course in the Bronx. Harvey played the course with some teammates, and thanked Trump for the round. In New York, that’s enough to bring the wolves at the door.
Harvey posted a photo to Instagram of himself with catcher Kevin Plawecki, pitcher Jon Niese, and bullpen catcher Eric Langill with a caption that simply thanked Trump “for a great day on the new course.” Fans immediately turned on him for his perceived political affiliation, then the New York Daily News got a hold of him:
The Daily News story itself is almost worth a read just for the cringe-worthy baseball and golf puns throughout. This so called controversy came just a day after Harvey was at odds with fans who didn’t like that he posted photos of himself on a private plane. Harvey had to counter by posting another photo of himself on the team flight.
So to recap, Harvey is suddenly a villain because he took a private jet to a resort on an off-day, which hundreds of professional athletes do regularly, and thanked a man for a round of golf. Yep, quite the jerk. Like the Mets themselves, it seems Harvey just can’t win lately.
