German rider Tony Martin defended the yellow jersey as the fifth stage of the Tour de France got underway on Wednesday after several days of hectic racing. Martin, a three-time world time trial champion, took the jersey from British rider Chris Froome on Tuesday’s fourth stage, a treacherous one featuring several cobblestone sections that all the main Tour contenders got through safely. Martin, wearing the Tour leader’s jersey for the first time in his career, started the day with a lead of 12 seconds over Froome and 25 seconds over American rider Tejay Van Garderen.
