Bucs CB C.J. Wilson reportedly lost two fingers in fireworks accident
It turns out Jason Pierre-Paul wasn’t the only NFL player to suffer a fireworks-related injury over the holiday weekend.
According to the Tampa Tribune, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson suffered a “severe hand injury in a fireworks accident” during the July 4th weekend. The Lincoln (N.C.) Times-News reported, through sources close to the family, that Wilson lost two fingers in the incident.
“We are aware that C.J. was involved in an accident that occurred over the July 4th holiday,” the Bucs said in a statement. “It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands and our primary concern at the moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation.”
Wilson, 25, played in two games for the Bucs last season and registered four tackles. The N.C. State product also appeared in two games for the Chicago Bears in 2013 after signing with Chicago as an undrafted free agent.
The extent of Wilson’s injuries are not known and his agent declined to provide further details.
“As we are dealing with a medical issue, we are in contact with the ballclub as well and they are taking the lead on any information to the public regarding his condition or anything football-related,” Joel Turner, Wilson’s agent, told Pro Football Talk. “With federal law on releasing medical information, etc., we are deferring any media issues to the Tampa Bay medical staff/front office.”
The news of Wilson’s injury comes a few days after reports emerged that Pierre-Paul, a standout defensive end for the New York Giants, severely injured his hand in an incident involving fireworks. Like Wilson, the full extent of Pierre-Paul’s injuries is unknown, though it has been speculated that he could miss training camp.
