Local sports digest: Texas defensive tackle Mike Williams picks Stanford – San Jose Mercury News
The Stanford football program landed its 11th oral commitment for the 2016 class when Texas defensive tackle Mike Williams announced on Friday that he had chosen the Cardinal.
Williams, who attends All Saints Episcopal School in Fort Worth, had numerous offers and visited Texas, Ohio State, Oregon and TCU. The 6-foot-2, 300-pounder is rated a four-star recruit by scout.com and a three-star by rivals.com. He ranks 110th overall on Scout’s Top 300 player list.
Williams is the second defensive tackle to commit to Stanford, joining Bo Peek, a 6-3, 290-pounder from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida.
Rowing
Stanford had two boats in action on the third day of the Henley Royal Regatta in England, with the quad advancing to the semifinals with a victory over the Quintin/CRC squad.
After the teams traded leads in the first half, Stanford locked in and crossed the finish line first with a time of 7:31. The margin of victory was 13/4 lengths.
The victory sends the Stanford quad on to the semifinals of the Princess Grace Challenge Cup.The varsity eight was not able to advance in the Remenham Challenge Cup, losing to Brown University.
San Jose Giants
The Stockton Ports scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a tie en route to a 5-2 win over the visiting Giants (33-45). Angel Villalona hit his third home run in two games, a solo shot to lead off the second.
