In the middle of Anibal Sanchez‘s no-hit bid, Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had to leave the game with a left calf strain suffered while running the bases. The team says he will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.
Here is the unembeddable video of the play. Cabrera was running on a 3-2 count with two outs when he pulled up lame. Victor Martinez fouled the pitch off and Cabrera had to come out. Cabrera is an extremely tough guy, he’s played through a ton of injuries in his career, so it’s disconcerting to see him limping off the field like that.
The results of the MRI are not yet available and might not be until Saturday. Speaking to reporters after the game, manager Brad Ausmus said a stint on the disabled list seems likely. Remarkably, it would be the first trip to the DL in Cabera’s career.
”I’m not optimistic at all,” Ausmus said. ”When Miggy says he can’t play, it is serious, because Miggy plays through everything.”
Miguel Cabrera expected to go on DL for 1st time in his career. Since his 1st full season in 2004, nobody has played in more games (1,809).

The 32-year-old Cabrera came into Friday’s game hitting .345/.453/.575 (184 OPS+) with 15 home runs and 53 RBI. Andrew Romine replaced him at first base. The Tigers are six games back of the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central. It’s difficult to imagine them hanging close if they’re missing Cabrera for any significant length of time.
