The Nationals have been the best team in the Majors in May and we can’t discount that. However, while they have won 5 of their last 7 the victories can be credited to the pitching staff that has allowed 3 or less runs in 6 of the games and 2 or less in 5. The offense during that stretch of games has only once exceeded 3 runs and that was 4 runs scored against Philadelphia. Today’s starter for Washington has by far the worst statistics on the staff with the highest WHIP and Era and has allowed the most home runs. Cincinnati also has strong lifetime batter vs. pitcher stats with the roster hitting .302 with a decent .791 OPS against Stephen Strasburg. Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani was impressive in April, but has been mediocre in May. He is coming off of a solid performance against the Indians where he allowed 1 run over 7 innings on 3 hits and may be returning to form. He has limited experience against the Nationals’ lineup holding them to 2 hits in 10 at bats in relief. We’ll fade Strasburg here and hope that the Reds can take advantage of the struggling pitcher.
