Report: Bowl game in Austin won’t be played in 2015
There won’t be a bowl game in Austin, Texas, in 2015 after all.
It was reported earlier in the month that three new bowls in Austin, Orlando and Tucson, Ariz., were official, but ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported Wednesday that the game in Austin has not come to fruition – for now.
The other two – the Cure Bowl in Orlando and the Arizona Bowl in Tucson – are still set to debut this season.
From ESPN:
The Austin bowl hoped to have teams from the American and Sun Belt conferences. It was tentatively going to be played at the University of Texas’ Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Football Bowl Association executive director Wright Waters told ESPN that the game could become official in 2016 instead.
“We applaud their courage to explore it and have the courage to step back and make sure they had it right,” Waters said. “They can come back in a year to organize and reach out to key individuals in the community. It will be better in every way a year from now.”
With the Austin bowl out of the picture, the bowl slate is set with a record 41 games, including the College Football Playoff title game.
