College football notebook: Former Notre Dame lineman Hegarty picks Oregon – KSPR
Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Matt Hegarty will spend his final college season at Oregon as a graduate transfer.
Hegarty announced in March that he was leaving Notre Dame. He also visited Florida State before deciding on the Ducks.
Last fall, Hegarty started 11 games at guard or center for the Fighting Irish. At Oregon, he has an immediate chance for playing time at center after Hroniss Grasu was drafted by the Chicago Bears earlier this month.
The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Hegarty suffered a stroke in 2012 after playing in nine games for Notre Dame and had heart surgery. The next season, he returned to play in 12 games.
–Former Michigan running back Justice Hayes is transferring to Southern Mississippi to complete his college football career.
As a graduate transfer, Hayes will be eligible to play this fall for the Golden Eagles.
In Hayes’ final season at Michigan in 2014, he ranked fifth on the team in rushing with 213 yards on 48 attempts.
— LSU suspended junior offensive tackle Jevonte Domond after he was arrested on a felony domestic abuse charge in Baton Rouge, La.
The Baton Rouge Advocate reported after reviewing police records that Domond was accused of felony domestic abuse battery with strangulation and was booked at the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Domond played in one game for the Tigers last season after transferring to LSU from Glendale (Ariz.) Community College. He was not expected to be a regular on the offensive line during the 2015 season.
