NEW YORK – Alex Rodriguez climbed another leaderboard on Wednesday afternoon, this time the all-time RBI leaderboard. The Yankees slugger hit a three-run home run off Chris Young of the Royals in the third inning and moved into sole possession of third place on the career RBI list.
Here’s the milestone RBI:
And here is the updated all-time RBI list:
- Hank Aaron – 2,297
- Barry Bonds – 1,996
- A-Rod – 1,995
- Lou Gehrig – 1,993
- Babe Ruth – 1,990
By passing Gehrig, A-Rod now has the most RBI in AL history. It’s worth noting RBI did not become an official stat until 1920, which is why Cap Anson, who had 2,075 RBI when calculated retroactively, does not appear on the all-time RBI leaderboard.
Rodriguez will soon pass Bonds for second place all-time and then become only the second player in history with 2,000 career RBI. He is under contract through 2017 and, as good as he’s been this year, it’ll be very tough to catch Aaron. Not impossible, but tough.
A-Rod, 39, came into Wednesday hitting .270/.371/.517 (155 OPS+) with 10 HR and 23 RBI. He passed Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list with his 660th homer a few weeks ago and is now only 20 hits away from 3,000.
