Astros closer Luke Gregerson can’t finish ninth Tuesday, out for Wednesday

(1:58 am ET) Astros closer Luke Gregerson could not get the job done in the ninth inning Tuesday, allowing two runs on two hits in two-thirds on an inning before being pulled against the A’s.
Astros manager A.J. Hinch said afterwards that Gregerson would not be available for Wednesday’s series finale, per MLB.com.
“[Gregerson] obviously hasn’t gotten ahead of hitters the way he normally does,” Hinch said. “He’ll likely be down [Wednesday], just given the volume of the last four days, and get him back fresh for the next series.”
Giants’ Santiago Casilla escapes jam with 10th save of season

(1:48 am ET) Giants closer Santiago Casilla entered Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers with a two-run lead in the ninth inning. He retired Andre Ethier and Alex Guerrero before allowing a single to Juan Uribe and issuing a walk to Joc Pederson. He forced Jimmy Rollins to ground out for the final out of the game, escaping with 2-0 win and his 10th save of the season.
Casilla has converted 10 of 12 save attempts, with a 1.65 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings of relief this season.
Giants’ Tim Hudson goes six-plus scoreless in win over Dodgers

(1:44 am ET) Giants pitcher Tim Hudson tossed six-plus scoreless frames to lead his club past the Dodgers, 2-0, on Tuesday. Hudson (2-3) allowed no runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 6 1/3 innings of work. Of his 100 pitches, 66 were strikes.
Hudson has allowed only three earned runs over his last 11 2/3 innings pitched. He lowered his ERA from 4.57 to 4.01 following Tuesday’s gem. He will look to get back at .500 on the season Sunday at Coors Field against the Rockies.
1B Chris Carter crushed two-run homer in Astros’ victory

“To get the lead on him with [Carter’s] home run was huge then keeping it on him.”
D-Backs may give Patrick Corbin more time before next rehab start

(1:35 am ET) Diamondbacks general Manager Dave Stewart was impressed by Patrick Corbin‘s (elbow) third extended spring rehab on Monday, but revealed that although there’s “nothing to be alarmed about,” the team will likely give the southpaw some extra time before his next rehab start, per the Arizona Republic.
“In talking to him, in the outing before, he went after it pretty good and he was just a little bit reserved going out (on Monday),” Stewart said. “Plus, there was the setting. It was a camp game, the adrenaline wasn’t going as good as if it was a normal game.”

(1:31 am ET) Dodgers pitcher Carlos Frias was pegged with a tough-luck loss Tuesday night against Tim Hudson and the Giants.
Frias (3-1) allowed a run-scoring single to Buster Posey in the third inning for his only blemish of the evening. He surrendered one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings of a 2-0 defeat. Of his 88 pitches, 54 were strikes.
Frias has allowed only seven earned runs over his last three starts (17 innings). His next start will come Sunday at home against San Diego.
Cubs OF Chris Coghlan lifts off twice in loss to Padres

(1:27 am ET) Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan enjoyed his first multi-homer performance since Sept. 20, 2014 during Tuesday’s 4-3 defeat to the Padres.
Coghlan took starter James Shields deep for a solo home run in the third inning, and launched a solo home run off closer Craig Kimbrel with two outs in the ninth. He finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He raised his batting average from .194 to .205, with six homers and nine RBI in 38 games.
Indians closer Cody Allen fans two, retires side in ninth for save

Allen fanned two and now has 22 K’s in 15 innings.
Cubs’ Jason Hammel goes seven strong in no-decision

(1:21 am ET) Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel put together another dominant outing but was unable to factor into the decision Tuesday night against the Padres.
Hammel allowed a run-scoring single to Yangervis Solarte in the fifth and another run-scoring single to Will Venable in the seventh for his only blemishes of the evening. He was charged with two runs — none earned — on three hits and no walks while striking out eight over seven innings of a 4-3 defeat. Of his 106 pitches, 76 were strikes.
Hammel has lowered his ERA from 5.19 to 2.70 on the year over his last five starts. He’ll look for win No. 4 on Sunday at Arizona.
Padres’ Craig Kimbrel works past shaky outing for save No. 11

(1:15 am ET) Padres closer Craig Kimbrel worked past another shaky outing for his 11th save of the season Tuesday night against the Cubs.
Kimbrel surrendered a solo home run to Chris Coghlan with two outs in the ninth inning. The right-hander was charged with a run on one hit and no walks while striking out two in an inning of work to secure a 4-3 victory.
Kimbrel has allowed four earned runs over his last four innings pitched, raising his ERA from 4.63 to 5.74 on the year.
