The Diamondbacks compiled multiple arms over the offseason as they looked to remake their rotation. One of those acquisitions is starting to pay dividends.
Rubby De La Rosa didn’t get credit for a complete game on Monday, but that’s only because the game went 13 innings. The right-hander tossed a career-high nine frames against the Marlins, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks while recording five strikeouts. He needed just 94 pitches to finish the nine innings.
De La Rosa’s terrific showing Monday was a continuation of what he’s done in his last seven starts. After struggling back on April 7 in his first outing of the season, the 26-year-old has since put up a nifty 3.40 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 42/10 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings. De La Rosa’s control has been an issue for him in the past, but he’s walked just 12 over 53 innings this season for a 2.0 BB/9 rate to go along with his 8.0 K/9 rate.
De La Rosa’s command can fade at times and he’s had his issues with left-handed batters this season, but the former top-100 prospect is showing some glimpses of a potential breakout season.

V-Mart DL-Bound?
It appears that the Tigers may have finally reached the end of their rope with Victor Martinez.
Martinez has been battling through pain in his surgically-repaired left knee nearly the entire season and it’s made his bat futile against right-handed pitching. After going hitless in four at-bats Monday, he’s now batting just .141 with one extra-base hit (a double) this season versus righties. To make matters worse, Martinez felt a pinch in the knee again on Monday, which he acknowledged is the same thing he felt when he had a flare-up back on April 11.
“From the looks of things, I think we’re going to have to at least talk about other options,” manager Brad Ausmus said after Monday’s game. “But we’ll do that privately.”
Does that mean putting V-Mart on the disabled list? Shutting him down for a couple weeks in no way guarantees that Martinez will put his knee ailment behind him, but at this point it’s probably the best course of action. Martinez has 12 hits – including his lone home run — in 26 at-bats against left-handers this season, as the knee doesn’t affect him from that side since his weight is on the other leg. But, V-Mart refuses to bat right-on-right, so is it worth it to continue carrying him on the roster when most of his plate appearances are going to come from the side he’s just not healthy enough to bat from?
The Tigers should reveal a gameplan for Martinez on Tuesday.
Scooter to Minors
From the .154 batting average to the disabled list stint brought on due to an injury suffered in the shower, it’s been a rough start to the 2015 season for Scooter Gennett.
He’ll now have to figure things out in the minors, as the Brewers optioned the 25-year-old to Triple-A Colorado Springs Monday morning.
Gennett was slated to be a full-time player at second base for the first time this season after Rickie Weeks departed as a free agent. He’s just never got on track, though, as his .403 OPS ranks dead-last in the National League for players that have received at least 65 at-bats. The Brew Crew is obviously hoping that Gennett goes down to Colorado Springs and plays his way back onto the major league roster soon, but general manager Doug Melvin said there’s no timetable for the second baseman’s return.
“I told him we don’t have a time frame,” Melvin told MLB.com. “I said, ‘I would like to think you’re going to be back in a couple of weeks, but don’t hold me to it, because if you’re not performing well, it won’t happen. If you’re performing well and playing good defense, it could happen.'”
Hector Gomez started at second base for the Brewers on Monday, but manager Craig Counsell said he’ll go with the hot hand at the position. Elian Herrera and Luis Sardinas are in the mix for playing time along with Gomez.
