Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond minutes after nearly being no-hit
Just moments after the Miami Marlins were nearly no-hit by Atlanta Braves right-hander Shelby Miller, the team announced that manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary had been relieved of their duties effective immediately.
Yeah, we’d say it was a wild afternoon in Miami.
The firing was not a direct result of Sunday’s dismal offensive performance, but the entire series against the division rival Atlanta Braves could probably be viewed as the final straw. After appearing to show signs of life early in May, the Marlins have now lost six of seven games , including a three-game sweep by the Braves. Overall, they’re 16-22 on the season.
There were reports as early as April 18 that Redmond was on the hot seat this season, and that owner Jeffrey Loria was actively seeking his replacement. Those rumors cooled down when the Marlins started warming up, but it would appear Loria’s patience was being tested the entire time and finally wore out this weekend.

Redmond was hired by the Marlins immediately following the 2012 season. A rebuilding squad finished 62-100 in his first season and improved to 77-85 in 2014. As a result, Redmond was actually given a two-year extension in Septrember.
After an active offseason, which included extending Giancarlo Stanton and adding standout Dee Gordon, they were expected to compete for a postseason spot in 2015. At 5 1/2 games out in the NL East, it’s still possible they’ll make a run. But if they do, it will come under new leadership.
Redmond is now the second manager to be fired in MLB this season. The Milwaukee Brewers axed Ron Roenicke earlier this month and announced Craig Counsell as his full-time replacement. The Marlins will announce Redmond’s replacement at a news conference Monday morning.
