Cubs beat Mets again when Chris Coghlan draws walk-off walk
The Chicago Cubs won for the sixth time this season in the final at-bat on Wednesday and the Mets didn’t even make them put the ball in play in scoring the final run.
Carlos Torres gave up a single to Anthony Rizzo to start the inning and Chicago manager Joe Maddon inserted Matt Szczur to pinch run. Starlin Castor singled to left allowing Szczur to go from first to third with a head-first slide. New York intentionally walked Miguel Montero to load the bases and then brought in Jeurys Familia to pitch.
Familia got free swinging rookie Jorge Soler to strikeout on balls in the dirt but then couldn’t find the strike zone when Chris Coghlan came to the plate. Coghlan drew a walk to force in the winning run, giving the Cubs a 2-1 victory.
Chicago has won the first three games in the series and will go for the sweep over New York on Thursday.
The Cubs’ rally spoiled a strong performance from New York starter Matt Harvey, who was in line for his sixth win of the season when he left the game after allowing just three hits over seven innings. He struck out nine, including the 300th of his career when he got Dexter Fowler in the first inning.
Chicago starter Jason Hammel provided his third quality start in his past four outings. He went eight innings and struck out six, allowing one earned run. Hammel has a 3.11 ERA.
