Baseball Daily Dose: Dose: Soriano to the Rescue?

Wednesday, May 13, 2015
Steve Cishek has been removed of his ninth-inning duties for the Marlins after blowing four saves in his first seven chances while posting an atrocious 10.32 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 11 1/3 innings of work.
According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins are “very much engaged” in discussions with super agent Scott Boras regarding free agent right-hander Rafael Soriano. The 35-year-old owns 207 career saves, and locked down 32 games for the Nationals in 2014 while posting a 3.19 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 59/19 K/BB ratio. If he does indeed land in Miami, he would immediately gain mixed league relevancy.
In the meantime, the Marlins are set to utilize the vaunted closer-by-committee approach in the ninth inning. While Mike Dunn and Bryan Morris could receive consideration, A.J. Ramos is the most likely beneficiary of this situation, and the one who fantasy owners should’ve rushed to the waiver wire to grab. The hard-throwing 28-year-old has been outstanding through 17 innings on the season, registering a 1.06 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 21/6 K/BB ratio. As long as he performs well in his first few chances, Ramos could have a chance at locking down the closer’s job for the remainder of the season.

Tulowitzki could want out of Colorado
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Tuesday that Troy Tulowitzki and his agent Paul Cohen will decide in a meeting on Thursday whether or not it’s time to ask the Rockies for a trade.
With an 11-17 record going into play on Tuesday, the Rockies certainly don’t look like contenders in the National League West, and there is a chance that Tulowitzki has simply had enough of the losing.
The oft-injured 30-year-old still has six years and $118 million remaining on his contract, and would certainly see a dip in his production moving away from Coors Field, but with the state of the shortstop position around the league he would generate a flurry of interest should the Rockies put him on the market.
Sherman notes that the Mets, Padres, Pirates and Mariners all have obvious needs at shortstop and could be interested in Tulowitzki’s services. The All-Star shortstop is hitting .307/.317/.495 with two homers and 10 RBI through 28 games on the season.
Strasburg obliterated by D’Backs
Stephen Strasburg endured the worst start of his big league career on Tuesday, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.
He was removed from his previous start with a shoulder injury that had reportedly been corrected by a chiropractic adjustment, and his velocity wasn’t the issue on Tuesday as he sat in the upper 90’s. The issue with Strasburg seems to be a mechanical issue which has led to very poor command. The Diamondbacks were simply teeing off on pitches up in the zone and over the heart of the plate on Tuesday.
He has been a complete and utter disaster through seven starts, compiling a horrifying 5.55 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 35 2/3 innings. Fantasy owners may want to consider sitting him down for awhile until he shows signs of turning things around.
National League Quick Hits: Noah Syndergaard fanned six in a losing effort against the Cubs in his big league debut on Tuesday… Wil Myers was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup due to soreness in his wrist… Mike Minor is set to undergo exploratory shoulder surgery and will miss the remainder of the season… MRI results confirmed that Yasiel Puig (hamstring) suffered a setback in his recovery… Yadier Molina was removed from Tuesday’s game against the Indians due to tightness in his upper back… Brandon Phillips was removed from Tuesday’s game with an injury to his left big toe, though it isn’t expected to be serious… David Wright (hamstring, back) has yet to receive clearance to resume baseball activities… Chris Heston racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts in a victory over the Astros… Jason Grilli (back) returned to action, serving up a game-winning double to Devin Mesoraco… Bryce Harper belted his National League leading 12th home run in a losing effort against the D’Backs… Jake Arrieta punched out 10 in a win over the Mets… Elian Herrera homered for the third consecutive game in a loss to the White Sox… Mark Trumbo hit a pair of bombs to lead the offensive onslaught against the Nationals.
American League Quick Hits: Edwin Encarnacion blasted a pair of home runs and drove home three as the Jays walloped the Orioles… Hisashi Iwakuma was shut down for the next 10-14 days from all throwing as he still has stiffness in his strained right lat… Derek Holland (shoulder) has yet to be cleared to resume his throwing program… Jarrod Parker (elbow) is set to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Monday and could require a third Tommy John procedure… Carlos Rodon will make another start in the White Sox rotation on Friday against the Athletics in Oakland. There’s a chance he remains there for the long haul… Jose Reyes (rib) is scheduled to take live batting practice on the field before Wednesday’s game… O’s manager Buck Showalter expects Matt Wieters (elbow) to return on June 4… Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) threw 30 pitches in a successful bullpen session… Justin Verlander (triceps) threw 20 pitches in a light bullpen session on Tuesday… George Springer (concussion) will be activated from the disabled list on Wednesday… Chris Sale punched out 11 over eight innings as he defeated the Brewers…
