Rays fan throws first pitch to boyfriend who then proposes at the mound
Tampa Bay Rays fan Melissa Dohme attended Monday’s game at Tropicana Field against the Yankees expecting simply to throw out the first pitch. The experience became one of the most memorable days of her life
Dohme tossed the ceremonial pitch to her boyfriend, Cameron Hill, who then approached her near the mound, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. It was a charming and beautiful moment for two people who met under horrifying circumstance in January 2012.
Dohme was the victim of domestic violence who thought she had managed to successfully end her relationship with a former boyfriend. But on Jan. 24, 2012, that man attacked her with a knife, stabbing her 32 times before leaving her in the street for dead as detailed in a first-person story for CBS. He has been convicted of the crime and sentenced to life without parole.
Hill was one of the EMTs who came to Dohme’s aid that night and played a part in saving her life. The couple became close in the weeks and months that followed and now they’re engaged following their special night on Monday.
