Texas A&M adds JUCO QB Jake Hubenak

Texas A&M has been unsettled at quarterback since Johnny Manziel left following the 2013 season. So it’s no wonder coach Kevin Sumlin opened the door to Texas product Jake Hubenak, who just finished a season at Blinn College.

Hubenak threw for 4,052 yards and 47 touchdowns in eight games at Blinn last season. He had 10 touchdown passes against Arkansas Baptist College on Sept. 20. Hubenak screams Big 12 quarterback and definitely the type of player that would fit in A&M’s fast-paced system.

“It’s amazing, just to think how far I’ve come,” Hubenak, who is 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, told the Austin American-Statesman. “You look back on stuff and wonder why certain things happen. But on days like today, you remember that things happen for a reason.”

Hubenak started his career as a walk-on at Oklahoma State after a knee injury made him lightly recruited out of high school. However, he was impressive as a prep. As a senior at Georgetown High School, Hubenak threw for 4,094 yards and 48 touchdowns. He led his team to the 2012 Class 4A Division I championship game, and was named the All-Central Texas Player of the Year.

He transfered to Blinn after one season with the Cowboys.

Hubenak becomes one of five quarterbacks on the A&M roster this fall. That includes Kyle Allen, who had 16 touchdown passes and seven interceptions after winning the starting role late in 2014, and top prospect Kyler Murray, who was the star of the Aggies 2015 recruiting class.

Hubenak will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“It’s wide open, and whatever happens, I’m going to accept my role,” he said.
