Bayern Munich at Barcelona Match Preview

To say that Bayern Munich has an uphill battle in this 2nd leg would be a major understatement. They have to overcome a 3-goal deficit since they lost on the road to Barcelona in the first leg of this tie last week.

Bayern has already wrapped up another Bundesliga title, but unless they make a monumental comeback they will bow out of the Champions League in the semifinals for the 2nd straight season.

Not only does Bayern need to overcome a 3-goal deficit, but also they face a Barcelona squad that has kept a clean sheet in 7 straight matches. Not only has the Barca defense been stellar, but also in their last 7 matches they have scored 27 goals.

Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are both out for this match due to injury and out for the rest of the season as well. The loss of Robben is a HUGE one, as he ranks 2nd in the Bundesliga in goals scored and his offense will be sorely missed. Bayern has not scored a goal in their last 3 matches.

The Bayern offense will need a spark from somebody and the likes of Thomas Müller and Mario Götze, who have combined for 22 goals in the league season, have to step up and pressure the Barca defense that has been impenetrable as of late.

The Bayern defense also has a tall task facing the great striking trio of Neymar, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi, who scored 2 goals in the first leg at home.

Bayern did keep Barca in check for 75 minutes in the first leg, but gave up 3 goals after that. It is key that they play like that again, but they will not be able to play a defensive match since they need to overcome the 3-goal deficit. They must attack and push forward, but really have to be wary of the Barcelona counter-attack.

The midfield play for Bayern must provide scoring chances, as they must create space and push forward all match long.

There is hope for Bayern though, as they beat Porto at home 6-1 in the 2nd leg of the Champions League quarterfinals after losing 3-1 on the road.

Barcelona still has a legitimate shot at the treble, as they are 4 points clear of 2nd place Real Madrid in La Liga play and will face Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey.
