by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:53 pm ET) The Red Sox have promoted first baseman Travis Shaw and placed him in their Friday lineup at Toronto.
The move was necessitated by the one-game suspension to slugger David Ortiz, which forced usual starting first baseman Mike Napoli to move to designated hitter.
Shaw has struggled at Triple-A Pawtucket with just six hits in his last 38 at-bats. He owns a slash line on the year of .189/.245/.311.

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

He had missed two weeks with a hamstring strain, though he was out of Thursday’s game with general soreness. It is not known if he has suffered a setback with his hamstring, or if there is another ailment bothering Gomez.
Gerardo Parra is back in center field for the second straight day and is batting sixth for new manager Craig Counsell.
Rays SP Alex Cobb opts for season-ending Tommy John surgery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:47 pm ET) Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb told reporters Friday he will have season-ending Tommy John surgery. Cobb did not make one start for Tampa Bay in 2015 and had been on the disabled list all season.
The right-hander was hoping to pitch through a partially torn ligament in his right elbow. However, he found out it was actually a full tear in his UCL, which made the decision to have surgery easier.
Pitchers usually need 12-18 months of recovery time after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Cobb is undergoing the surgery Thursday and is targeting a Sept. 2016 return.
The 27-year-old Cobb is 35-23 with a 3.21 ERA in 81 starts in four seasons for the Rays.

Phil Gosselin will get the start at second, batting seventh. This is just Gosselin’s fourth start of the year.
Matchup against Hamels has Mets 1B Lucas Duda benched
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:43 pm ET) Several factors have entered into play to prevent Mets first baseman Lucas Duda from entering into play Friday night.
The first is a lefty-lefty matchup against Phillies premier starter Cole Hamels. The second is that he is 2-for-16 lifetime against the southpaw. The third is that Duda has just three hits in his last 20 at-bats.
Michael Cuddyer is set to play first instead while John Mayberry will take Duda’s place in the third spot of the order.
Duda still boasts a strong slash line of .290/.379/.440.
