MLB reviewing Maddon's comments at umpire
Major League Baseball is “reviewing the situation” regarding Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s comments on Wednesday night directed at home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn, per ESPN.
Maddon was ejected from Wednesday’s game against the Cardinals in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes with Reyburn. Maddon, who was ejected for the second time this season, was not happy about calls during Kris Bryant‘s and Jorge Soler‘s at-bats in the fifth inning. Both players struck out looking.
Maddon then said something during Starlin Castro‘s at-bat leading off the sixth inning, which led to Maddon being tossed from the game.
“I had enough,” Maddon said, per MLB.com. “I had enough, had enough. It was the whole game. It was egregiously bad. You cannot permit that to happen. We’re trying to ascend, and we’re not going to take that from anybody, anywhere at any time.
“We played a veteran club with a veteran battery, and we’ve got guys who’ve barely had a month in the big leagues, and I’m not going to take it. Our guys deserve equal treatment, and I’m not going to take it.”
Maddon appeared to be overly frustrated with the calls being made against Bryant, Soler and Addison Russell. All three players are rookies.
“I’m not going to put up with anything,” Maddon said. “I’m not going to permit our guys to get short-changed based on the fact that our guys haven’t been here a long time.”
