Mayweather vs Pacquiao pros picks: Predictions from UFC and combat sports stars – Bloody Elbow
Check out the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao picks from UFC and combat sports pros including Rumble Johnson, Alistair Overeem, Renzo Gracie, and many more.
It’s Thursday, April 30, and with 2 days away, there is only one combat sports event to be talking about right now: Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is live on PPV this Saturday May 2, and Bloody Elbow will have your full fight coverage all week.
In the past weeks leading up to the fight, the staff here at Bloody Elbow has been talking to various combat sports figures to get their predictions for the fight. Check out what everyone has to say in this exclusive Bloody Elbow pros picks:
ANTHONY JOHNSON: Mayweather. Too fast, smart, awesome defense and undefeated for a reason.
ALISTAIR OVEREEM: Pacquiao! I’m going to tell you why. It’s because I like his whole behavior more than Floyd Mayweather’s behavior with money, gold, and no respect. I’ve met Pacquiao once, and he was very nice, very humble.
CHAEL SONNEN: May but cheering Pac. Boring fight, great build up. They will get my $100.
EDDIE BRAVO: Mayweather by boring decision. Ronda/Cyborg will be 100 times more exciting than this, runteldat
KING MO: Mayweather is like Bernard Hopkins. He’s got a plan A, B, C, D, and E. If you watch him against Emanuel Augustus, Augustus is an awkward fighter but with a lot of skill and he broke him down. When I saw that fight I know he was special because he can make adjustments on the whim, and he’s got great range, great reflexes, great counterpunches. He makes you miss. And he’s got underrated body attacks. If Floyd wins the first two rounds then he’s going to win the rest. So I usually look if Floyd can win those first few rounds or if they’re close. Zab Judah, Shane Mosely, Castillo, Maidana, De Hoya made the first few rounds good but that’s about it. Guerrero got the first round and a half and after that it was all Floyd. For Pacquiao to win, he’s got to do good right away. He’s got to throw a lot of punches, hope he lands some or catches him, and just outwork him and hope the judges favor his style. I’ve got Floyd to win and think Floyd can completely out point Pacquiao, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Judges gave either one a split-decision type victory. It could end up like the Masivdal-laquinta fight where you have a guy throwing volume and not landing and you have a guy throwing clean shots and landing. And it’s harder to judge fights like that. If you’re very knowledgable you can pick it up. They often give credit for who’s moving forward but you shouldn’t get credit for beating up air, you should get credit for actually landing.
CUB SWANSON: Mayweather by decision, but I wouldn’t be surprised by a questionable draw. There’s just too much money to be made.
LUKE ROCKHOLD: It’s hard to pick against Mayweather, I’m not gonna lie. I think if Pacquiao is gonna get it, he has to do it in the early rounds. Beyond that, it’s Mayweather all day.
GEGARD MOUSASI: I hope Manny Pacquiao wins. I think Pacquiao would’ve won the fight if it happened 5 years ago. 100% he would’ve won. But now, Mayweather picked the time of the fight, he picked when they fight. I think Floyd Mayweather is smart for fighting Manny Pacquiao now, than 5 years ago. Now I think Floyd has a little bit of a better chance, but I’m still rooting for Manny Pacquiao.
SIMON MARCUS: I believe Mayweather will win the fight. I see Mayweather as the superior, more skilled fighter and I think he will just be too good for Pacman to catch him.
STEPHEN QUADROS: When the Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao match was proposed years and years ago, my immediate gut reaction was that Floyd Mayweather would win. At the time, I thought he was too big, too crafty and too confident to lose to Manny Pacquiao. Here we are in 2015, and the fight is finally going to happen, and you know what…my opinion has not changed. Floyd Mayweather will win a unanimous decision in a disappointing contest that will most likely be boxing’s last mega fight.
RENZO GRACIE: I’m Pacquiao since I can remember… If you have been to Phillipines and you had the chance to see the greatness that comes with the humbleness of this amazing boxer… You would have Pacquiao as your favorite too…. 😉
ANDREI ARLOVSKI: I think Pacquiao, he is faster , he has nothing to lose/less pressure, he is punch harder, training w Freddy – he is like Greg in MMA & I just like him – I put money on PacMan !!!
GREG JACKSON: I’ll go with Mayweather based on his slick defense. You never know, could go either way.
JIMMY SMITH: Mayweather. Manny’s kryptonite has always been the counter-puncher who could take advantage of his aggression. Floyd is the greatest counter-puncher of his generation.
MIKE RICHMAN: Oh man, that’s a hard choice to make. I’m a fan of both of them. My heart says Pacquiao, but my mind says Mayweather. He’s the greatest boxer, he’s just too good. I’ll tell you what I want to see, a rematch. I want to get two fights out of this. I have a feeling if Pacquiao wins, there won’t be a rematch, but if Mayweather wins, he’ll rematch him in September and then retire, just to make another $80 or $90 million. I’m just so glad to in a time to be able to see a fight like this.
BENEIL DARIUSH: I’m picking Manny Pacquiao. He’s a man of faith and that makes him my brother in Christ.
JIM MILLER: I’m gonna have to pick Pacquiao, mainly because I’m rooting for him. I don’t really watch much boxing, but I’m into this fight and I’m gonna have to watch. It’s too big a fight not to watch.
IAN MCCALL: We all want pacman to win but I think Floyd will pull off a decision. Manny has to take a lot of chances to catch him.
BRUCE BUFFER: I say goes the distance and my gut says Manny Paquiao by “split decision”
RAY SEFO: I’m going with Pacquiao.
DUSTIN JACOBY: I’m picking Mayweather. I think Pacquiao is the best fighter bar none that Maywather has ever fought, and Mayweather has struggled with southpaws. But Mayweather is too fast, his defense is unbelievable, and it’s hard to beat a guy when you can’t hit him. So I think Mayweather gets the W and becomes even richer than he already is.
TOM DEBLASS: I’m picking Manny by decision. I think he can outwork Floyd.
CARLOS CONDIT: I’ll say Pacquiao.
KJ NOONS: Pacman I want to win, but Mayweather will win, no doubt.
DARION CALDWELL: I got Money Mayweather, man. It’s hard to go against somebody who’s never felt defeat, you know? He’s been doing it for a long time. Obviously, I don’t agree with his lifestyle, but in the ring he’s undefeated. So, I think he’s gonna pull it out.
PROS PICKING MAYWEATHER: Anthony Johnson, Chael Sonnen, Eddie Bravo, Cub Swanson, Luke Rockhold, Simon Marcus, Stephen Quadros, Greg Jackson, Jimmy Smith, Mike Richman, Ian McCall, Dustin Jacoby, Darion Caldwell, KL Noons, King Mo
PROS PICKING PACQUIAO: Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi, Renzo Gracie, Andrei Arlovski, Beneil Dariush, Jim Miller, Bruce Buffer, Ray Sefo, Tom DeBlass, Carlos Condit
