UNLV pays homage to Las Vegas with new uniforms, helmets (Photos)
UNLV unveiled brand new Nike uniforms and helmets on Wednesday night, and new head coach Tony Sanchez said he wants the city of Las Vegas to be a “prominent part” of the Rebels’ new appearance.
“Las Vegas is so important to our University and our football program wants to be a big part of the Las Vegas community,” Sanchez said in a release. “We are fortunate to live in one of the world’s great destinations and these uniform designs are one of the ways we will proudly represent our city.”
Additionally, “LAS VEGAS” is written down the legs of the team’s new white pants, while the red and black pants also pay homage to the city.
From UNLV:
The words LAS VEGAS are found in all capital letters in UNLV’s custom font along both legs of the white uniform while select diamonds from the iconic Stardust sign — a nod to the city’s popular Neon Museum Boneyard — can be seen on the sides of both legs of the red pants and black pants.
Also, both the new silver and red helmets have a “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign on the back.
“Las Vegas is so important to our University and our football program wants to be a big part of the Las Vegas community,” Sanchez said. “We are fortunate to live in one of the world’s great destinations and these uniform designs are one of the ways we will proudly represent our city.”
According to the school, the 2015 season will be the first time that the Rebels “more than one color of helmet.” It also marks the first season since 1981 that the team will wear red helmets. Silver has been the team’s primary helmet color for the last 33 years.
Coming off a 2-11 2014 campaign, UNLV opens its 2015 season on the road at Northern Illinois on Sept. 5 before hosting UCLA on Sept. 12.
