Giroud: Arsenal won't alter style
ESPN FC’s Craig Burley sounds off on comments that Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea play a “boring” style of play, as Burley explains the writing was on the wall when Cesc Fabregas chose Chelsea over Arsenal.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has insisted his team will never change their approach to the game in a bid to try and challenge Premier League champions-elect Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho’s Blues were taunted by Arsenal fans after their 0-0 draw against the Gunners on Sunday, with cries of “boring, boring Chelsea” echoing around at Emirates Stadium at the final whistle.
Yet when asked whether he could see a scenario where Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger opted to change his approach to the game and try to adapt the Mourinho ethos, the French striker insisted such a prospect was highly unlikely.
“It’s true maybe they are not [playing] the same game as us, but we are not going to change our game and I think they are not going to change their game,” he told reporters.
“I think they are pleased with that and if they are champions, what can you say?
“They [Chelsea] have to win just one game or maybe have a draw, so you have to be honest with yourself, they are ten points ahead with five games to go.”
Olivier Giroud reckons Arsenal, like Chelsea, have no interest in changing their playing style.
Arsenal goal scoring legend Thierry Henry hinted after the Chelsea draw that Wenger may need to look at additional striking options if he was to mount a sustained push to challenge Mourinho’s side next season, yet Giroud is convinced the current Gunners squad is ready for a title push so long as everyone involved remains fully fit.
“Hopefully if we can have less injuries, keep the same group and with maybe one or two new players, we are going got have a great season I am sure, but you never know,” he added.
“We have to finish this one first, and to get second and win the FA Cup would be a great season. It has been a few years since we finished second and if we can do it we can see an improvement, which is great.
“I know we can still improve ourselves and that is what we have been doing since I signed for Arsenal. I am proud about it and pleased with that.
“I just want to carry on like that and I know if we keep our best players and this determination with the team spirit, we are going to join [next season’s title] race.”
