Oklahoma St. WR Samples transfers to Houston; A&M WR Gonzalez picks Kansas
Two four-star wide receivers from the class of 2013 – Ra’Shaad Samples and LaQuvionte Gonzalez – have found new homes.
According to FOX 26 in Houston, Samples is transferring from Oklahoma State to the University of Houston to play for new head coach Tom Herman.
“I’ve known coach Herman since I was 16, and I have a really good relationship with (wide receivers) coach Drew (Mehringer),” Samples said.
Samples, a native of Dallas, was the No. 243 overall recruit in the 2013 class, according to Rivals. He redshirted his first season at Oklahoma State and saw action in six games for the Cowboys in 2014, registering three receptions for 11 yards.
The 5-foot-11, 178-pound Samples said he’ll have to sit out the 2015 season due to the NCAA’s transfer rules and then will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
“I feel like I can finally move forward and focus on one thing,” Samples said. “It feels good, like the weight is off my shoulders.”
announced on Twitter Sunday that he plans to transfer from Texas A&M to Kansas.
Elsewhere, GonzalezAt Kansas, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Gonzalez will reunite with David Beaty, the former A&M receivers coach who was hired as Kansas’ head coach in December. Gonzalez was the No. 234 overall recruit in Rivals’ 2013 class rankings and made an immediate impact for the Aggies in 2013 with 21 catches for 240 yards and a touchdown.
Gonzalez had a smaller role with five catches for 77 yards and a score in 2014 and announced his decision to transfer last week.
Like Samples, Gonzalez will sit out the 2015 season and then will have two more years of eligibility remaining.
