Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director Michael Zorc confirmed the Bundesliga club will have to make a decision on midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s future “soon.”
On Friday, it was reported Gundogan was on the verge of reaching an agreement with Manchester United. However, the following day the club’s CEO refuted the rumors saying the German international had not informed the club of any desire to leave Dortmund.
Gundogan’s current deal with the club expires in June 2016, and the midfielder has been linked with move to Arsenal and Real Madrid in recent months.
Should the player inform Dortmund that he wants to leave the Westfalenstadion, the club would then look to sell him in order to avoid a repeat of the situation which saw striker Robert Lewandowski join Bayern Munich on a free transfer last summer.
In an interview with the German publication Kicker, Dortmund’s sporting director revealed there will be “changes” at the club this summer, while confirming a decision on Gundogan’s future would be made “soon”.
“Gundogan’s situation isn’t straightforward, because his contract expires in 2016,” Zoras told Kicker. “There will be a decision soon.”
The official then went on to comment on the on-going transfer speculation surrounding team captain Mats Hummels, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.
“As far as I know, Hummels’ contract still runs until 2017,” Zorac added. “We did not receive any offer that we should think about.
“There will surely be some changes to the team this summer. Maybe more changes than in recent years. But we won’t radically change our team.”
