The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays opened a 3 game series tonight at Tropicana Field. The Jays will be trying to give some payback to the rays after tamp Bay went into Toronto and won three of four at the Rogers Center last week.
The Jays are on a mini roll winning a trio of games at home against American League East rival Baltimore. The Rays got back on track with consecutive wins against Boston after dropping four straight to start their home stand.
Toronto is sending out right handler R.A. Dickey to the mound who is still looking for his first win. He has pitched well enough to win in two of his three starts this season, but lack of run support in a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay and a blown save by the bullpen in a 4-3 loss to Yankees have him winless on the season.
Dickey has had success against the Rays especially in his last four starts (all quality) where he is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA over 26 innings.
Drew Smyly will make his first start of the season for Tampa Bay after three rehab appearances in Double-A Jacksonville where he was good pitching 8 2/3 scoreless innings. Note that he didn’t exceed 3 2/3 innings in the three outings and may hard pressed to be around past the 5th.
The left handed Smyly has just one career start against Toronto and it was a brilliant one pitching a complete game 2 hit shutout last August on the road at the Rogers Center.

It all comes down to the readiness of the Rays starter D.Smyly to go a distance in this game. It would be a stretch to think that he will still be around past the 6th and the while the bullpen has been better as of late we still don’t have any confidence in the unit. Dickey has pitched well enough to give his team a shot to win each time he has taken the ball this season. Bautista is out but Toronto has enough offense remaining to get it done with the red hot J.
