Jesse Chavez will be making his first start of the season for the Athletics after four appearance out of the bullpen where he has been good pitching 6 2/3 of scoreless relief. Chavez has good historical numbers versus LAA with two quality starts last season allowing 3 runs over 13 innings allowing 12 hits and fanning 14. Nick Tropeano got called up from the minors to make his first MLB start of the season today. He pitched ok in Triple A throwing 11 innings, striking out 12 but did get dinged for 5 runs. Last season he had four starts in September for the Angels going 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA.

Chavez did look good against the Angels last season and he has done all that was asked of him coming out of the bullpen this season so there are things to like. That said, the historical batter vs. pitcher numbers suggest that scoring may not be an issue for LAA and note that he will be stretching it out for the first time this season and may not be at his best. Nick Tropeano didn’t prove last season that he could dominate MLB batters and he while getting 12 whiffs in 11 innings in the minors this season he did allow 5 runs. The total line is set at a reasonable 8 and we feel confident taking the over in this spot.
