Vitale picks Pitt – Citizens Voice
Dominic Vitale announced he will continue his wrestling career at Pittsburgh on Tuesday via his Twitter page.
Vitale, a Northwest student who wrestled for Benton, finished fourth in the state at 152 pounds in AA and had a career record of 117-45. Vitale was a two-time state qualifier at Benton and went 33-13 in his senior season.
“It’s the chance to get a top notch education and wrestle for one of the best programs in the country,” he said. “When I stepped on the campus and met the coaches and team, it felt like home.”
Vitale was on campus over the weekend and made his decision Tuesday afternoon, saying he felt it was the right time and the right place.
“The campus is beautiful. They have the Cathedral of Learning and there’s so much history in that building and in that area,” Vitale said.
Vitale secured his first state medal this year at Hershey when he beat Tri-Valley’s Anthony Snyder in the consolation bracket.
It was an impressive personal moment for Vitale, and it was made even more special as his brother, Anthony, secured a state medal with a win on the mat beside him almost simultaneously.
The Vitale brothers were two of five Benton wrestlers to win state medals. They were joined by Logan Womelsdorf, Mike Stuart and Allan Diltz — all of whom are Northwest students.
The elder Vitale brother will be joining a Pitt program that is led by head coach Jason Peters, who will be entering his third season with the Panthers when Vitale steps on campus.
