The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Monday that that the team had signed former Heisman Trophy Award winner Tim Tebow. While he’s been out of the NFL since August 2013, Tebow will be expected to compete for the No. 3 quarterback job.
On March 16, the Eagles brought Tebow in for a private workout. Despite the fact that Tebow has worked in a spread offense in the past, it remains to be seen how Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly will use the former first-round pick.
Not only is newly acquired quarterback Sam Bradford on the Eagles roster, but so is backup Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley, and G.J. Kinne. There’s no guarantee Tebow will be on the 53-man roster once preseason ends in early September, but Tebow will be given every opportunity to make the Eagles roster
Tebow was considered one of the greatest college football players ever while he attended the University of Florida. While at Gainesville, he set SEC records in total offense (12,232), rushing touchdowns (57) and total touchdowns (145).
Tebow was a three-time Heisman finalist (winning the award in 2007), three-time first-team All-SEC honoree and helped the Gators win two BCS National Champions in 2006 and 2008.
Once a first-round pick (25th overall) of the Denver Broncos back in 2009, Tebow has appeared in 35 games, starting in 16 of them. In 2011, Tebow would see his first initiating action under center.
In relief of an ineffective Kyle Orton, Tebow would start the Broncos final 11 games in 2011. Tebow led the team to an 8-8 record and their first AFC West division title since 2005.
Tebow finished the 2011 season with 1,729 passing yards, 12 touchdowns against six interceptions. He also rushed for 660 yards and scored six touchdowns and helped the Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild-Card Round.
In 2012, the Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning and then decided to trade Tebow to the New York Jets for their fourth and sixth round picks. Tebow saw limited action in New York as he only started two games and completed 6 of 8 passes for 39 yards. In April of 2013, the Jets decided to release Tebow.
The New England Patriots signed Tebow to a two-year contract in June of 2013, the day before the team’s mandatory minicamp. The contract didn’t offer Tebow any guaranteed money but did include playing-time incentives.
After recording a 47.2 passer rating for the Patriots during the 2013 preseason, the team decided to release Tebow. Ever since New England released the former Davey O’Brien Award Winner, Tebow has been working in broadcasting for the SEC Network.
While Tebow isn’t expected to play much with the Eagles, the team wants to get him as many reps as possible during OTA (Organized Team Activities). Tebow has said on a number of different occasions that his goal was to get back into the NFL, despite his career in broadcast. Today, ESPN released a statement saying Tebow would have a home with the network if things do not work out for the Eagles.
