The Week Ahead: Week Ahead: Nothing But Brett

Is he healthy?
That’s always been the question surrounding Brett Anderson. He emerged as one of the better young starting pitchers in the game in Oakland, but over the last five years, his career has been marked by an endless barrage of injuries and setbacks.
When he has actually been able to take the mound, Anderson has continued to show glimpses of effectiveness, so he has remained an intriguing asset. The latest club to take a flyer on him is the Dodgers, who inked him to a $10 million deal in December even though the lefty was limited to eight starts with the Rockies last year. Thus far, that investment is looking wise.
Anderson came out of spring training healthy and has been sharp in early action, posting a 3.27 ERA with seven strikeouts and two walks over 11 innings in his first two starts. He goes twice on the road in The Week Ahead, but one of those turns comes at Petco Park.
Available in more than 90 percent of Yahoo! leagues, Anderson is a strong sleeper on our two-start list this week, and may be worth rostering permanently as long as he can stay on the field.
Some more notes on this week’s two-start crop, followed by streamer suggestions, injury updates and more:
* Tyler Matzek is lined up for two home starts, and while that’s not always great news for a Rockies starter, he has proven mostly immune to the pitfalls of Coors Field in his young career. The 24-year-old has a 3.51 career ERA at home, and he’s on a nice run overall dating back to last September. In his last nine regular-season starts, Matzek has a 1.88 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 57 innings.
* Matzek’s rotation-mate Jorge De La Rosa is expected to come off the disabled list and make his first start of the season at Coors on Monday, and that would be followed by another home start against the Giants. It’s tough to know what exactly to expect from De La Rosa, who’s been out with a groin injury since mid-March, but last year he went 10-2 with a 3.05 ERA at home.
* Hisashi Iwakuma is off to a bit of a rocky start this year but should be able to get on track with home starts against Houston and Minnesota.
* As much as I like Kyle Gibson, he’s on the road twice this week, and in the past that’s been a bad omen. He had a 4.68 ERA away from Target Field last year and was obliterated in his first start this season at Detroit.
* Matt Shoemaker and Hector Santiago both go twice at home for the Angels against lineups that aren’t too intimidating. Shoemaker is the preferable option but I’d be pretty confident rolling with either one.

The following pitchers are generally available in over 50 percent of fantasy leagues and have favorable match-ups this week:
American League
Wednesday, April 22: Jeremy Guthrie vs. MIN
The Twins offense has been struggling early and has shown minimal power. We like Guthrie’s chances to shut them down at home.
Thursday, April 23: Jesse Hahn @ LAA
Hahn had a great spring and has been solid in early action for the A’s, so he’s worth a look even against a good offense on the road.
Thursday, April 23: Drew Hutchison vs. BAL
He has a 6.97 ERA, but Hutchison has pitched better than that number suggests and hasn’t yet had a chance to take the hill at home.
National League
Wednesday, April 22: Archie Bradley vs. TEX
Maybe the best streamer of the week. Bradley has loads of ability and should shine at home against a weak Rangers lineup.
Thursday, April 23: Kyle Hendricks @ PIT
We’ll forgive Hendricks for his rocky season debut, which came at Coors Field. Look for a rebound in Pittsburgh from the capable sophomore.
Thursday, April 23: Sean O’Sullivan vs. MIA
Expectations were low for O’Sullivan as Philly’s fifth starter, but he performed well against the Nationals in his first start and will look to follow up against a Marlins offense that has also struggled.
