Browns work out Garrett Grayson – NBCSports.com
Browns work out Garrett Grayson
If the Browns can’t work out a trade to move up for Marcus Mariota in the first round of the NFL draft, their next option could be taking Garrett Grayson in the second round.
The Browns visited Colorado State and had a private workout with Grayson, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports.
The Browns own the No. 12 and No. 19 picks in the first round, and there’s been talk that they could package those picks to move up and draft Mariota. But if that doesn’t work out, Grayson would likely be available with their second-round pick, No. 43 overall.
Grayson is coming off an excellent senior season at Colorado State in which he was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and gaining 4,006 yards, with 32 touchdowns and seven interceptions. But there’s a big difference between the Mountain West and the NFL, and not everyone is sold on him as an NFL passer.
The Browns don’t seem to think Johnny Manziel has much of a future in Cleveland, which means Josh McCown is the short-term answer, and some other quarterback will be the long-term solution. Perhaps that other quarterback will be Grayson.

In Cleveland a ” private workout ” means meeting with the same hobo who suggested the Browns draft Manziel.
.
I don’t know necessarily agree that the Browns don’t believe Manziel has a future in Cleveland. I think they just want to get some other baskets to put their eggs in. Until you have a QB that is a proven winner, you have to keep looking.
Even The Dark Hoodie drafts a QB every other year and he has a hall of fame QB starting.
Ray will pick this guy at 12. I HATE BEING A BROWNS FAN. Our uniforms went from the best in the NFL to the worst high school uniforms ever
I like this kid. Those numbers with that surrounding cast should get folks attention.
Johnny Football is going to come out of rehab unemployed.
Much rather see this kid drafted in 2nd than reaching for Winston or Mariotta in the 1st.
They wasted a 1st round pick on Jonny Football……I think he deserves more than one start.
McCown, Shaw, Grayson and (sigh) Manziel…not a bad stable of QB’s to have…not great, but not bad. I guess it all depends on what system they run on offense. Hoyer did well last year with a play-action based passing game up until Mack went down and the running game went south. I don’t think any of these guys can win games consistently with their arm, so the QB must fit the system and vice versa if they’re going to be successful.
But he has no red flags? I don’t get why the brown stains would be interested?
I like this kid too. His game tape got my attention. Extremely accurate and poised. I’d take him ahead of Winston in a heartbeat.
Yes, please. No stupid deal to move up for Mariota. Cleveland needs to take a break from first round QBs for a bit.
Poor Johnny, they never even gave him a chance.. greatest QB prospect the NFL has had since Vince Ferragamo and the Browns treated him poorly.. you deserved so much better Johnny! Johnny!!!!
The Browns annual qb debacle about to commence. Is there anyway Farmer can survive the season with his lack of talent evaluation?
Perhaps that other quarterback has yet to be born! It’s Cleveland. They’ll put those poor fans through anything!
Redskins should take Grayson in the second round.
Funny how people keep suggesting Mariota is the Browns first pick, and they are wanting to trade for him. They have yet to work him out, yet he’s the front runner? Saying he’s the front runner because the Browns QB coach tutored the kid for a couple weeks is a weak argument. I have a hard time believing Farmer and Haslam are going to trade the farm away to draft Mariota because the first year QB coach says you should. Until the brass brings him in for a workout, I’d relax.
Go Browns!
How about Conner Shaw??? Seem’s everyone has forgotten about this kid. I think this kid would surprise everyone and have a good year, and give the Browns a better chance at winning more than seven games this coming season.
I prefer Bryce Petty (Baylor) due to his physical tools. However, it seems to me that Garrett Grayson is a little smarter. Grayson also played in a pro-style offense, while Petty played in more typical spread-option offense.
While Grayson may adapt to the NFL quicker, I don’t see him as a franchise QB, maybe a good backup. I see Petty as the better long-range QB.
However, I spend my Sundays in my recliner, not on the sidelines.
The Browns will only be serious if Grayson gets Jimmy Haslem’s mobile phone # so he can text him during the Draft, like Johnny Football did last year. “Make this happen, Jimmy”
I just don’t get the Browns. Why give up on Manziel so early?
I like this option better than selling the teams “future” to acquire Mariota. I don’t think it’s a sign of the team giving up on Manziel, it’s more of a contingency plan.
Ah Cleveland…where’s good QB’s, and every other position on the team for that matter, go to die!
#RIP
You could see from a mile away that the Browns were going to screw up Manziel’s transition to the NFL. First, they know they are getting a guy coming from a system in college that is unlike that used by most pro teams, including their’s. Then they put him in a QB competition against a long time journeyman QB … a guy with less talent but with a lot of years experience. Experience can make a ton of difference. Duh! Then Manziel gets frustrated because he was used to being the starter and gets a little bit of an attitude. When Manziel finally does get his shot, he is ill prepared; because he developed a little bit of an attitude he was partying when he should have been studying.
What the Browns should have done: from day 1 told Manziel that he is the guy. Tell the team that too. Tell Hoyer that he has the starters role, but that he needs to understand he is just the steward. Throughout the year, inserted Manziel on a regular basis. Build an offensive playbook that maximizes Manziel’s skill set. Ease him into the starters role gradually over time. By early October., put Manziel in as the starter. Even is Hoyer were winning. Why? Because it is obvious Hoyer is not the long term solution for anyone. He lacks the athleticism and skill set to be more than a journeyman NFL quarterback. At most a 5 on a scale of 1 – 10.
The way the Browns did it they shafted Manziel’s confidence. And the main way they did that is that they created a dynamic where the players would look at Hoyer as the team leader, not their 2014 first round QB draft pick.
Yeah, that’s why we’ve had 5+ Pro Bowlers the last few years, huh, Bengal kitty. Try again…
SMH.
You know, Cleveland might have a better team if they didn’t consistently waste their first round draft pick on a quarterback. Maybe if you put a team on the field, one of those quarterbacks you keep trying to bring in might actually work out.
The Browns have solid talent. It’s depth that needs addressed. Fans on other teams, say like the Bungals would do well to remember they got hammered by the Browns once last year. They couldn’t beat us until all of the injuries took their toll. Good luck with that overpaid choke you guys call a QB…

I agree that Manziel should (and will, probably) get more of a chance than he’s had. BUT…and it’s a big but…he’s placed himself in this situation. He was the one who treated his first year in the NFL like summer camp.
He has to prove to the team and his teammates that he’s ready to work and try to make something of himself. If he does that, then he’ll get a legitimate shot.

I agree with some of what you say, however I don’t think ANY team is going to annoint a questionable first rounder as “team leader” until he earns it.
I don’t think anyone, including Hoyer, had any illusions about who was eventually going to be The Guy. But that has to be earned, and Manziel appears to have such a strong sense of entitlement that he didn’t prepare.
A QB with a poor work ethic is not long for the NFL.
I didn’t want the Browns to draft Manziel, but I’m certainly not rooting against the guy now that we have him. It’s in everyone’s best interest for him to wake up, man up and get to work. He needs to prove that football is his life and he needs to act like a team leader. He had a mentor in Hoyer who has a terrific work ethic, but apparently that didn’t matter.
Granted, the Browns deserve a lot of the criticism they receive, but their biggest mistake, IMO, was forcing Manziel into the lineup when he clearly wasn’t ready. And that was likely a directive from Haslam, because there’s no way the coaching staff wanted to put him in given the shape he was in.
The Browns war room will be Jimmy Haslam, a hobo, his limo driver, a Hooters waitress named Tanya or Tiffani, the guy who played Cooter on the Dukes of Hazard, a flatulent basset hound, and propped up against the Cheerwine dispenser – a black-velvet rendering of Elvis. It will have a cash bar. They will draft 6 quarterbacks.
“The Browns have solid talent.”
A team that has struggled this many years (decades?) to field a capable team clearly has something.
“A QB with a poor work ethic is not long for the NFL.”
Jay Cutler disagrees.
Could be dark days and a short career ahead for Garrett Grayson.
Getting drafted by the Factory of Sadness pretty much guarantees it.
I agree with the Browns needing to take a break on the 1st rd QB’s. At this point give that clown Kelley one of your 1st for Bradford.
Been a Browns fan my entire 30-year life…
Barely remember them being any good… because I was like 4 years old the last time they were any good.
I think their new uniforms are pretty awesome, as I see no reason to continue “tradition” if the team is awful every single year.
I also think Manziel still might work out. I really hope so. Alcoholism gets a lot of people in Ohio… there’s just not much to do in winter here… and it lasts 6-7 months.
Using your first round picks to build and improve your team rather than on yet another project quarterback would be the smart thing to do.
Will the Browns do the smart thing?
Mariota is overrated and far from ready to play QB in the NFL. Ohio State proved that in the NCAA playoffs, they were not a good defensive football team but were able to take Mariota out of the game and confuse him. If they were able to do that to him, just think what NFL D-coordinators will do.
Wait till the 3rd or 4th round and take Hundley or Grayson.
The Clowns collect quarterbacks like I used to collect trading cards. Those cards were worthless like Clown QBs. But QBs cost a lot more.
The Factory of Sadness getting ramped up for another season of full production….
Whatever QB they draft, Browns fans will buy his jersey before he proves himself.
The factory of sadness is a Sunday gathering of bad QB jerseys: Detmer, Couch, Garcia, Delhomme, Dilfer, Quinn, Frye, Anderson, McKown, McCoy, Weeden, Manziel, etc, etc, etc…
PS: Browns fans also went nuts buying michigan’s Braylon Edwards jerseys (OSU fans should never buy a michigan alum jersey).
last year going into the draft we had the 4th pick..this year we have the 12th. That is improvement. NO FANS ANYWHERE love an underdog like Cleveland fans…Manziel is going to wreck this league!!!
Ever wonder why there aren’t more great quarterbacks in the NFL? Because every year the Browns have to get their grubby little hands on a top QB in the draft so they can RUIN him!
And Garret is like ” oh no, please don’t let these guys draft me, PLEASE GOD!”
Being a QB drafted by CLEV, in any round, is a sure career DEATH sentence!
I’m praying for you Garret to not be picked by this dumb org!
The owner can’t even run his gas station let alone a football team.
@lemdawg: Mariota was 24-37, 333 yards, 2td, 1 int, with his 3 best wr’s and 2 best te’s all out… and with a partially separated shoulder.
Yep, terrible game, just terrible. Dude can’t play a lick. Y’all will do much better with your fourth round pick, no doubt… not sure why the Browns dont’ take your word over Jaworski, Mayock, and every other guy with supposed expertise out there, obviously they don’t have the level of knowledge and experience you do, I think you’d be a perfect fit as their GM, carry on that strong tradition of excellence y’all have going there.
It’s not often an NFL team lucks out with a lower round QB pick, much less a higher round QB pick….Seattle is blessed!
Good luck to Cleveland…I hope they succeed in swapping a pair of 1’s for a number 2 pick. Tennessee, are you listening?
