AHL game features goalie fight, seven-goal third period (Video)
The Utica Comets are attempting to wrap up the AHL’s Western Conference No. 1 seed. The Binghamton Senators are already looking toward next year as they currently stand nine points out of a playoff spot in the East.
The two teams met in a wild game on Wednesday night that featured a goalie fight along with seven goals in the final period.
Late in the second period, Darren Kramer mixed it up with Utica forward Frank Corrado, which set off a scrum between the teams. Comets netminder Jacob Markstrom apparently wanted to stay busy, so he skated toward Senators goalie Peter Mannino and the two danced.
Only one word to describe that: disappointing. Markstrom and Mannino both commit to the fight, so why not go all the way through with it? You’re already getting ejected, might as well make the most of the experience.
Markstrom exited the game with 29 penalty minutes, while Mannino was handed 27. Mannino had already entered the game replacing starter Chris Driedger, who was injured in the first period. Emergency goalie Scott Greenham was then called upon and allowed three goals on 18 shots.
The floodgates opened in the third with seven goals scored and the game sent to overtime. In the extra period, Fredrik Claesson popped in the winner to give the Senators a 6-5 win.
