Dee Gordon dunks over Christian Yelich during postgame interview
The Marlins got on the board with an exciting walkoff victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night in Miami. After being swept at home by the Atlanta Braves earlier this week, it’s a win they badly needed just to get some confidence rolling on the field. Apparently, it’s also a win they badly needed so they could finally debut their new postgame celebration.
After Christian Yelich capped the wild 10-9 win with an opposite field single, he was immediately whisked away to the postgame interview to be held outside the Marlins dugout. We’ll also call this the danger zone, since Yelich was by no means safe from the antics of his hyped up teammates, who in this case wanted to create a LeBron James moment on a baseball field.

Leading the charge was a pair of Marlins newcomers. Starting pitcher Mat Latos quietly positioned himself behind Yelich and held a mini-baskeball hope over his head. Then Dee Gordon, who scored the winning run for Miami moments earlier, not so quietly exploded on the scene to dunk over Yelich.
Like this.
And like this, from a few angles.
Even the grown up boys in MLB never overgrow throwing down a nasty dunk on their friends.

Of course, it’s also enough to make a manager or general manager cringe a bit. Those are three valuable commodities coming together at once. It would be very easy to envision one tweaking an ankle or jamming a finger, costing them a start or handful of games.
No harm, no foul you might say, in this case. But we shouldn’t be shocked to learn that all three received a 20-second timeout in the clubhouse.
And with that, we retire the basketball puns and return you to baseball.
