Central's Milano picks Salve Regina – Eagle-Tribune
Milano to Salve
Central Catholic Super Bowl-winning quarterback Mike Milano will be playing his college football for Salve Regina, he announced Friday afternoon. A two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star, Milano finished his career at Central Catholic with a stunning 29-5 record, 4,588 yards and 42 touchdowns passing and 1,926 yards and 30 TDs running. He led the Raiders to the Division 1 state title as a junior and last fall threw for 1,558 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 973 yards and 12 more scores.
DACCORD ON RISE
Cushing Academy goalie Joey Daccord of North Andover is on the rise with June’s NHL Draft approaching. He is ranked the No. 10 North American goalie on the National Hockey League Central Scouting’s final rankings, which were released on Thursday.
The former North Andover High star made a major jump after being rated the No. 29 North American goalie in January.
North Reading’s Casey Fitzgerald of the US Under-18 team is ranked the No. 148 North American skater while Windham’s Connor Moynihan of the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) is the No. 156 North American skater.
MATTHEWS LEADS SHRINE
Two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star linebacker Zach Matthews of Sanborn was named to the New Hampshire squad of the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. Matthews led the Indians with 80 tackles and 948 rushing yards and scored 10 touchdowns last fall.
Division 1 state champion-winning quarterback Jack Hanaway from Pinkerton was also selected along with Astro defensive back Riley Cahill. Londonderry running back Dennis Bishop and Pelham lineman Nolan Duffy and running back Nick Johnson will also represent the Granite State, which will face Vermont on Aug. 1 at Castleton State College.
KUYKENDALL IN INDY
While 22.6 million fans watched Duke’s thrilling victory over Wisconsin in the NCAA basketball championship game on television, former Andover volleyball star Joe Kuykendall experienced it in person. The James Madison University student was a volunteer with the media coordination team at the Final Four, which was held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
FROM LOWELL TO O’S
Last summer, Jason Garcia was the opening day starter for the Lowell Spinners. Less than a year later, he is in the big leagues.
Garcia won a spot on the roster for the Baltimore Orioles, who selected him from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft. He made his major league debut on Thursday, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Who was Garcia’s catcher? Fellow former Lowell Spinner Ryan Lavarnway.
ONE WILFORK STAYS
While former Patriots star Vince Wilfork is off to play for the Houston Texans, the Massachusetts high school football scene will not have the luxury of avoiding his stepson.
Xaverian star linebacker D’Aundre Holmes-Wilfork announced on Twitter that he will play his senior season for the school in the fall. He helped lead the Hawks to the Division 1 state title last season after they lost to Central Catholic two years ago in the title game.
