Andrelton Simmons foils Travis d’Arnaud again with ridiculous throw
Every season, Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons leaves us with a seemingly endless number of clips that are worth replaying over and over. Sometimes those clips even help us get through those cold nights in mid-December, when baseball’s return seems so hopelessly far away.
That’s just how we feel though. As for New York Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud, we’re guessing he’d be happy if he never saw Simmons again, or at least never hit a baseball in his direction. Especially following Friday night’s game in Atlanta.

For the third time in the past two seasons, d’Arnaud lost a sure basehit thanks to a Simmons defensive gem.
If you watch the video, and we encourage you to do so several times, you’ll bear witness to one of the most amazing off-balance, jump throws we can recall. Simmons goes three steps into the outfield and away from his target throwing space, first base, to flag the ball down. He then plants, lifts off and launches a missile that’s right on the money for the out.
Granted, it does help Simmons’ cause that d’Arnaund is a catcher. But allow us to overlook the result and simply focus on Simmons’ unrivaled skills.
The velocity he gets on the throw is worth marveling at by itself. The accuracy is another. It’s just a remarkable, almost impossible play, but Simmons made it look effortless.

As several beat reporters quickly pointed out though, he’s done it before and he’s done it to d’Arnaud. It was eerily similar to play last where Simmons ranged deep in the hole at Citi Field and then fired an absolute rocket across the diamond to cut him down.

Or chop him down, as Simmons might say.
Oh yes, we’re entertained.
Travis d’Arnaud, on the other hand.
“That’s what, the seventh or eighth hit he’s taken from me?” d’Arnaud said. “All you can do is smile.”
Smile, and hope the next great one happens to someone else.
