Dodgers targeting Cuban right-hander Alvarez
The Dodgers are said to be very interested in hard-throwing young Cuban right-hander Yadier Alvarez.
Los Angeles, which seems intent on continuing to be a big international player, has extensively scouted Alvarez, with team president Andrew Friedman even traveling to see him in the Dominican Republic, where Alvarez has established residency. The Dodgers signed Cuban third baseman Hector Olivera recently for $62.5 million over six years, and appear to be targeting Alvarez now.
Alvarez, who throws 94-97 mph but has hit 99, is petitioning MLB to allow him to sign in this signing period rather than wait until July 2. There is no word yet on whether Alvarez’s petition will be approved.
The Dodgers have been strong internationally for years, having signed Cuban Yasiel Puig and Korean Hyun-Jin Ryu in recent seasons.
The Nationals, Blue Jays, Rangers, Phillies, Cardinals, Giants and Twins are among other teams showing interest in Alvarez. The Diamondbacks could become involved if he wins the petition, but they are among teams that have only $300,000 to spend in the period beginning July 2. The Yankees and Red Sox are also in that boat. (The first version of this blog had that information incorrectly reversed.)
