by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:46 am ET) The Tigers announced Wednesday starting pitcher Justin Verlander was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a right triceps strain. The move is retroactive to March 29.
Verlander was placed on the DL for the first time in his 11-year career. The Tigers also announced Wednesday they recalled Kyle Lobstein from Triple-A Toledo. He is tentatively listed as Verlander’s replacement for Sunday’s start against the Indians.
The six-time All-Star and 2011 AL Cy Young award winner has been sidelined since leaving a March 27 spring training start against the Blue Jays. He appeared to be progressing toward making his first start of the season Sunday before Wednesday’s announcement.

Report: Hatcher could earn lion’s share of save chances for Dodgers
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2:00 am ET) Although Dodgers manager Don Mattingly reiterated that there is no closer among the seven relievers on active roster, it appears as if right-hander Chris Hatcher could be in line to receive the lion’s share of the save opportunities while closer Kenley Jansen begins the season on the disabled list with a foot injury, according to the Orange County Register.
“We haven’t talked to anybody about roles,” Mattingly said. “We haven’t talked to guys about what inning they’re going to pitch. I think guys kind of know what time of the game they’re going to pitch.”
Hatcher picked up the first save of the season for the Dodgers on Monday.

by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(1:39 am ET) Brewers shortstop Jean Segura was hit by a pitch in the helmet by Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles on Tuesday. Segura stayed in the game and ended up popping out. The Brewers lost 5-2.
“I thought my nose was broken,” said Segura, who managed to avoid serious injury last year when struck on the face by a bat being swung on-deck by teammate Ryan Braun.
“I asked the trainer if I’m bleeding or something. It was scary. When I was lying on the ground, I felt pain in my nose. When the trainer said, ‘You’re not bleeding,’ I stayed in the game. Thank god it was nothing serious,” per the Journal Sentinel.
Segura went one for two with one run scored, putting his batting average at .400 through two games.
Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki impressed by the team’s doubles
by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(1:28 am ET) When Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was asked about the team’s 12 doubles hit through two games, he told the Denver Post, “Pretty cool.” The team’s 12 doubles through two games marked the first time that has happened since the 1912 New York Giants.
“What sticks out to me when I hear that, is that I’m really happy that it’s on the road. The first thing we would hear if we were at home was about how it’s a hitter’s ballpark, and they are at home, so that’s why all the doubles. So wait until they go on the road.”
The shortstop, who went two for five with one RBI in the team’s 5-2 win over the Brewers, was asked about the team’s 2-0 record.
“What does it mean? It means we are 2-0. And tomorrow we have a chance to sweep. We keep hearing that we are not a good team on the road, so we can keep answering some critics about us not being a good road team.”
