LeSean McCoy says Chip Kelly doesn’t respect star players
LeSean McCoy says Chip Kelly is obsessed with himself. But is McCoy obsessed with Chip?
McCoy stung his former coach Monday, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that Kelly doesn’t respect star players and that he believes he can win with a bunch of relative nobodies in the NFL.
“I don’t think he likes or respects the stars. I’m being honest,” McCoy told The Inquirer on Monday. “I think he likes the fact that it’s ‘Chip Kelly and the Eagles.'”
An aside: Wonder what DeMarco Murray, McCoy’s assumed replacement, thinks of this statement?
McCoy sure has spent a lot of time these past few weeks since being traded to the Buffalo Bills yapping about Kelly. One reason might be that the two haven’t spoken since the shocking trade for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Shock over the trade still might have something to do with this.
“[Agent Drew Rosenhaus] called up and he said, ‘Hey, it’s not a joke. Eagles are trying to trade you to the Bills,’ ” McCoy said. “I’m like, ‘What?’ “
At some point McCoy will need to turn the page on that unrequited love and start thinking about his new team and new coach, Rex Ryan, who needs his well-compensated star back to produce at a star-like level.
But McCoy’s words are not too different from what some Philadelphia Eagles fans have wondered in the wake of watching DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and McCoy be dispatched out of town the past year-plus. McCoy suggests Kelly’s ego is the reason why we’ve seen that happen.
“It was ‘DeSean Jackson — a high-flying, take-off-the-top-of-the-defense receiver.’ Or ‘the quick, elusive LeSean McCoy,'” McCoy said. “I don’t think [Kelly] likes that.”
One of the two men will be right. Either Kelly will win with his “nobodies” and show it’s his system is all that. Or the Eagles will struggle and McCoy’s theory will have a lot more credence to it.
