NHL Three Stars: Hiller gives Flames win relief; Ekman-Larsson crushes SJ’s playoff hopes
No. 1. Star: Jonas Hiller, Calgary Flames
With Karri Ramo injured 58 seconds into the Flames’ game against Edmonton, Hiller stepped in and stopped 27 of 27 Oilers shots on goal in a 4-0 win over their rivals. The Flames have 93 points with three games remaining, and are one point ahead of Winnipeg and Los Angeles (four remaining contests each). It was the longest relief appearance in a team-shared shutout in league history.
No. 2. Star: Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Arizona Coyotes
The young Coyotes blueliner wasn’t tanking at all in a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks. Ekman-Larsson scored one goal and added two assists in 28:02 minutes of play for Arizona, which pulled four points clear of Buffalo for the worst point total in the NHL. Meanwhile the Sharks are five points out of the playoffs with three games left to play.
No. 3 Star: Jeff Carter, Los Angeles Kings
Notched two assists in a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche. The victory kept the Kings in the playoffs. LA is tied with Winnipeg in points (92), but have more regulation and overtime wins (37) than the Jets (33). Carter has seven points in his last six games.
