Nationals starter Doug Fister goes six solid on Saturday

(4:57 pm ET) After two consecutive rocky starts, Nationals pitcher Doug Fister threw well on Saturday, holding the Yankees to two runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Fister threw four scoreless frames but the Yankees posted two runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run home run from second baseman Stephen Drew.
Red Sox P Justin Masterson primed for regular season

(4:52 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson is ready to go for his start on April 9th of the regular season. Manager John Farrell noticed that as the spring moved along, Masterson showed more arm strength.
“We know when he’s right, he’s going to put the ball on the ground,” Farrell said, according to ESPN. “He got through camp healthy and is primed to take a start next Thursday.”
Masterson gave up two runs on seven hits in five innings pitched in a 4-2 win over the Twins on Saturday. The 30-year-old posted an ERA of 3.52 in 23 innings this spring.
Last season he had an ERA of 5.88 with 116 strikeouts and 69 walks in 128 innings pitched.
Yanks starter Nathan Eovaldi shakes off rough first inning against Nats

(4:47 pm ET) The Nationals jumped all over Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi for three runs in the first inning but the right hander settled down and did not allow a run the rest of his start, going 5.0 innings and striking out six on Saturday.
Eovaldi came into Saturday’s game with a 0.66 ERA for the spring but saw it spike to 1.93.
Nationals reassign Mike Carp down to minor-league camp

(4:41 pm ET) Nationals first baseman Mike Carp was reassigned to minor-league camp on Saturday, according to MLB.com. Carp batted .205 (8 for 39) this spring. He has an opt-out, and can decide whether to accept an assignment to the minors, according to the Washington Post.
Nationals Clint Robinson makes 40-man roster, Rich Hill does not

(4:37 pm ET) Nationals first baseman Clint Robinson was told by the team that he made the 40-man for Opening Day, according to the Washington Times. The same report states that pitcher Rich Hill was informed that he did not make the 40-man roster.
“I’m on cloud nine,” said Robinson, per the Washington Post.
Robinson, 30, will be making the first Opening day roster of his career. This spring, he batted .327 with two home runs on 16 hits with eight RBI and 10 strikeouts.
In 2014, Hill posted an ERA of 1.69 in 14 appearances with the Yankees.
Steven Moya to start Triple-A season on DL

Report: Yanks choose John Ryan Murphy as backup catcher

(4:30 pm ET) The Yankees have decided on John Ryan Murphy as their second-string catcher and, as a result, designated Austin Romine for assignment, per LoHud.com.
Murphy and Romine came into camp competing to be Brain McCann’s backup. Murphy is hitting .250 with three doubles in 40 at-bats this spring while Romine hit .182 in 33 at-bats.
Giants’ will give Angel Pagan off days to prevent injury-plagued season

(4:25 pm ET) The Giants willl monitor outfielder Angel Pagan closely this season, and give him off days when needed in order to avoid long-term injuries, according to the Bay Area News Group. Pagan returned to the spring lineup on Wednesday after being sidelined for 11 due to a back injury. He is hitting .211/.302/.289 with one home run and four RBI over 38 at-bats this spring.
Red Sox closer Koji Uehara could be back by home opener

(4:13 pm ET) Red Sox closer Koji Uehara completed a 35-pitch bullpen on Saturday without any reported issues, according to the Boston Globe.
Uehara, who has been sidelined since March 14 with a hamstring injury, is scheduled to face live hitters on Tuesday, followed by a simulated game at Class A Greenville on Thursday. He will then start a minor-league rehab assignment on April 11 for Greenville. If all checks out for Uehara, he will be activated from the disabled list on April 13 for Boston’s home opener against the Nationals.
Rays starters Andriese, Ramirez get work against the Tigers on Saturday

(4:06 pm ET) Pitcher Matt Andriese started for the Rays on Saturday and threw just one inning, sending the Tigers down in order.
Erasmo Ramirez pitched the next 3 2/3 innings for the Rays and allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out six. Rays manager Kevin Cash said Friday that Andriese and Ramirez have both made the Opening Day roster but hasn’t decided which pitcher will start the fourth game of the season April 10 at Miami.
