Ross, Breslow, Layne, Wright make Red Sox’s Opening Day roster

(3:56 pm ET) Red Sox pitchers Robbie Ross, Craig Breslow, Tommy Layne and Steven Wright all made the Opening Day roster.
Ross, Breslow and Layne will definitely pitch out of the bullpen, but Wright might be needed for the rotation, if Joe Kelly (biceps) can’t start April 11 against the Yankees.
If Wright was optioned to the minors, he wouldn’t be able to be recalled for that start. Unless a roster spot opens due to injury, a player must spend 10 days in the minors following a demotion.
Red Sox option Matt Barnes, Brandon Workman to Triple-A

(3:51 pm ET) The Red Sox announced Friday they optioned pitchers Matt Barnes and Brandon Workman to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Barnes, who was being considered for a bullpen role in the majors, will be stretched out as a starter. Workman will work as a reliever at Pawtucket.
Red Sox place Joe Kelly, Koji Uehara on 15-day DL

(3:47 pm ET) The Red Sox announced Friday they placed starting pitcher Joe Kelly (biceps) and closer Koji Uehara (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list. However, neither player might be out for long.
Kelly could be ready to come off the disabled list in time for the fifth game of the season April 11 at N.Y. Yankees, and Uehara could also be activated by the 11th.
Orioles’ Gonzalez gives up three HRs in minor-league game

(3:43 pm ET) Orioles starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez threw 65 pitches in five innings during a minor-league game Friday, per MASNsports.com. He allowed three home runs, but otherwise was happy with his outing.
“It was crazy,” he said. “First pitch, I would throw a fastball and they would take. Next pitch, I would throw a curveball and then I’d try to come back with a fastball. It was over the fence. ‘I’m trying to work on something here, guys.'”
Gonzalez will start the third game of the season against the Rays.
“We have six starters. We don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with (Kevin) Gausman and Ubaldo (Jimenez), but I’m definitely excited for this season and being the third starter,” he said. “Throwing the third game in Tampa is going to be exciting.”
Orioles OF David Lough plays four innings in minor-league game

(3:39 pm ET) Orioles outfielder David Lough (hamstring) played four innings in left field and took four at-bats in a minor-league game Friday, per MASNsports.com.
“I felt good,” Lough said. “I hit the ball well, I ran the bases well. Didn’t feel anything, so that’s a good sign. Everything was positive. It went well.”
Lough, who will be placed on the disabled list, will play in an extended spring game Sunday.
“We’re just taking it day by day, but today went well,” he said. “Just to see some pitching again and get some at-bats in and field a little bit. I felt good. It went well.”
Mets’ Daniel Murphy gets 3 hits in minor-league instrasquad game

(3:35 pm ET) Mets infielder Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 in a minor-league intrasquad game on Friday, according to ESPN New York. Murphy hit a double, drew a walk, ran the bases and played second base in the game.
Murphy had been sidelined with a hamstring injury, which was sustained on March 19. On Thursday, manager Terry Collins said Murphy is expected to be ready on Opening Day against the Nationals.
Rangers prospect Joey Gallo (heel) out three weeks after surgery

(3:23 pm ET) The Rangers announced third base prospect Joey Gallo underwent heel surgery Friday morning, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He is expected to be sidelined for three weeks.
Gallo is considered the Rangers’ top prospect by Baseball America. He is also considered among the top 10 prospects in baseball by MLB.com and Baseball America.
Yankees’ Nova wants rehab to go faster, but happy with progress

(2:47 pm ET) Yankees starting pitcher Ivan Nova (elbow) threw his second 45-pitch bullpen session Friday, per MLB.com. Nova will throw two more bullpen sessions before progressing to live batting practice.
Nova said his recovery from Tommy John surgery is moving slower than he would like, but he is at least happy he feels good coming off the major elbow surgery.
“It feels great. I don’t feel any pain or anything like that,” Nova said. “I feel strong. I see some velocity coming out in the bullpen — at the end, I’ll throw three or four pitches and let it go a little bit. The other pitches are going great. I have no worries. I’m really happy the way everything is going so far.”
Report: Braves could have Foltynewicz start the season in the ‘pen

(2:28 pm ET) The Braves have not ruled out the possibility of pitcher Mike Foltynewicz starting the season in the bullpen, according to MLB.com. Foltynewicz struggled to make his presence felt and was unable to crack a spot in Atlanta’s starting rotation. He posted a 6.35 ERA over 11 1/3 innings of work this spring.
