The Big 10 is loaded at the top this season with defending national champion Ohio State and a Michigan State squad that returns their QB and has won 11 games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. These are the opening lines according to BOVADA SPORTSBOOK – CLICK HERE
Ohio St
Odds: 400
The Buckeyes look to repeat as Big 10 and national title champs and they have the squad to do it. It looks as if J.T. Barrett will keep his starting QB role while Braxton Miller, who was injured last season, will play WR. Ezekiel Elliott is back after rushing for 1,400 yards last season and the defense should be solid as well like last season when they ranked 26th in the nation. The big game for the Buckeyes will likely be their 2nd to last one when they host Michigan State.
Wisconsin
Odds: +700
The Badgers are the betting favorite to win the Big 10 West and while RB Melvin Gordon will be missed they have a future star in the backfield in Corey Clement. The defense returns 7 starts and that unit ranked 17th in the nation last season in terms of opponents points allowed. They have one of the weaker schedules in the conference this season, but a HUGE test will be in their season opener facing Alabama.
Michigan St
Odds: +750
Connor Cook is back under center after forgoing NFL riches, but the offense still has question marks, as Big Ten Receiver of the Year Tony Lippett and 1,500-yard rusher Jeremy Langford are both gone. They have talent to fill those wholes, but they are unproven. On defense the Spartans are loaded up front, but secondary is an issue after losing several key guys in that unit. They have a killer conference schedule having to face Michigan, Nebraska, and Ohio State all on the road.
Nebraska
Odds: +1200
Nebraska has a new coach in Mike Riley and he will run a more up-tempo pro-styled offense with QB Tommy Armstrong. RB Ameer Abdullah is gone and Armstrong was the team’s 2nd leading rusher last season and they need a RB to step up to help the offense. The D ranked 60th in the nation last season and should be better this season with a year of experience under their belt. They do host Wisconsin and the winner of that game is HUGE in the Big 10 West and they also host Michigan State late in the season.
Michigan
Odds: +1500
The Jim Harbaugh era begins in Michigan taking over for a squad that won only 5 games last season. Iowa transfer Jake Rudock may be the starting QB, but there are big question marks for the offensive line and they do not have a go-to WR. The defense may be the strength of the team and last season they ranked 27th in the nation in opponents’ points per game. At least the Wolverines facing both Michigan State and Ohio State at home.
Iowa
Odds: +2500
Iowa has some talent, but they were only 7-6 last season, but the team only returns 10 starters and their starting QB transferred. A big test will be facing Wisconsin on the road in their conference opener.
Minnesota
Odds: +2500
Minnesota finished 2nd in the Big 10 West last season, but repeating will not be easy with the loss of David Cobb, who rushed for over 1,500 yards last season. The defense was solid last season, but QB play has to be better and in the 2nd half of their season they face Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin in their season finale.
Penn St
Odds: +2500
The Nittany Lions had a great defense last season, but their offense struggled and this season QB Christian Hackenberg must step up and play solid on the offensive side of the ball. Penn State faces Michigan State and Ohio State on the road this season.
